Everyone told me, "Oh you can't put anything on your phone unless you get MPT" This is not true, i got my v551 yesterday, and i just needed to turn on bluetooth on my computer and BAM i was sharing ringtones, and wallpapers in seconds. I havent found out how to put pics i take from the phone onto my laptop but i only fooled around with it for an hour. So do not buy MPT unless you are positive you need it. Maybe im just lucky that it worked for me, oh wait maybe im not lucky because my bluetooth device (IBM T42 laptop) cost me $2500 lol

True as it may be, set that ringer as your ringtone and see if it functions, for some unwritten reason, MPT is the only program to have successfully put a working ringer on the phone. If you do it any other way the set ringtone wont ring, and when you try to change the ringtone it kicks you back one menu. Downfalls you should now look into?

yes, veilfore89, you are correct as far as what my experience has been. I believe if you use MIDI ringtones it will work just fine. But MP3 ringtones are a different story. When I transferred ringtones to my V220 (that I have since dropped and cracked the LCD), MPT compressed the MP3 down to below 56kbps. Also, another thing that I found is that creating an MP3 ringtone of less than 20 seconds long seemed to work better as well. NOTE:this was my experience with the V220 and V400 ... newer models may truly support 128kbps MP3s ... so this may not necessarily apply to you, but it may be worth a little futzing around on your part to try it out and see if it's a bitrate issue or a time issue (<20sec) or whatever.

agilicious780, I think that's GREAT that you are able to simply transfer files back and forth like that. Really that's the way it should be in my opinion, EVEN if you're using a data cable.

Anyway, my 2 cents. icon_smile.gif

Transfer files, yes. Have you tried actually transferring an MP3 clip AND setting the MP3 as your ringtone, getting it work successfully?

If yes, then please tell everyone else on this forum that hasn't had much luck doing this exactly what you did icon_smile.gif

If no, then post a clarification stating so in order to not confuse others that may read your post later icon_wink.gif

I'll weigh in on this issue. I recently bought a V551 through Cingular Wireless and I'm using a generic bluetooth dongle that has a WIDCOMM chip in it. I'm using WinXP SP2.

I installed the bluetooth dongle on my computer, and that went without a hitch. It now puts a bluetooth icon in my tray (in the bottom right). In Control Panel, I now have a Bluetooth icon, and you click that and select "Add Device..."

Make your V551 discoverable (Settings>Connection>Bluetooth>Setup>Find Me) and then follow the instructions in Windows. It will find your cellphone, ask about a passkey (just say you'll use a predefined one and enter something like 0000) and you'll be connected. Now, once I have an mp3 edited down for length and quality, I right-click it and say Send To...Bluetooth Device. It asks for which device, I select my V551, and it transfers, I accept on my handset -- and I'm good to go!

This works for mp3s, pictures, and games in .jar.

Now, my problem is with MPT. I purchased it to be able to transfer skins and such, and it won't find my phone icon_sad.gif Off to search the forums...

By the way, my mp3s work just fine as a ring tone.

netkent, I don't think you're referring to me, but I will share my experience. I used a feature in Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools that allows a user to import an MP3, select the section of song that the user wants to be their MP3 ringtone (I never chose a section longer than 20sec), I tweaked the song to fade out at the end, and the program compressed the song to about a 56kbps bitrate. Then once the "ringtone" was created I went back to the "File Explorer" part of MPT to actually send the ringtone to the phone via a USB data cable. I chose the first 15-20 sec of "Play that Funky White Boy" as my ringtone. icon_smile.gif It worked great on my phone. Sounded pretty good too. I created about 13-14 ringtones for me and a couple friends.

At that time, I was using version 3.11h or something of the Mobile Phone Tools. I don't know what it is now as I have never reinstalled it after my last reformat and reinstall of my OS, etc.

That's why I said in my earlier post that veilfore89 was correct in that the only way I and many others were successful in using MP3 ringtones we created or somehow acquired was through Mobile Phone Tools and NOT via some other transfer method. Apparently, this isn't true any more with some of the newer phones as lpret has demonstrated above with his V551. Thanks lpret for your explanation. icon_smile.gif

Thats true as well, some newer phones may have a tolerance to such ordeals but we know for sure ours don't. I don't think that p2k programs were intended for uploading things in this manner but rather downloading. I have not a BT dongle so I cannot attempt this method but I would very much like to. All in all we know that if your using USB and MPT your successful if your using USB and P2kman, tools, etc..You will not be successful.

Hmmm. Ok gang, I'm interested in why we apparently at least have a couple lucky folks that apparently got an MP3 clip to transfer and work as a ringtone. There are posts all over this forum that talks about the MP3s not being "tagged" correctly for ringtone use without MPT doing the transfer. Is there some new magic with the V551s?

lpret, as far as the problem you may have in getting MPT to discover your phone, first, suggest you upgrade to 3.25 (or more recent) before fooling with it too much. Also, double check your BT driver config. Check this post out. http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic21707.html
I had to do the steps listed here to get things to work properly. Same symptoms you describe.

Apologies for not being clear. I was indeed referring to lpret's post and not yours. If as you state the newer phones like the V551s (which I have one) may no longer need MPT for ringtones, I'm going to have to justify to myself some other reason why I bought MPT to make myself feel better icon_confused.gif Still curious re what changed...
