First I must appologize for the repeat questions, but like many i've been searching through the forum and haven't yet found all the answers I need...
My gf is a long time ATT customer and she's having signal problems in her new home. She started looking into "migrating" (aka replacing) her phone, but theres still a lot of blanks in the plan. so here are some questions... Thanks for you time
1) I've heard/read that some ATT phones are coming up Cingular after a restart... (cingular logo and vm) what's going on here?
2) We were told that she would have to buy a new phone to take advantage of the cingular towers/network... is this true?
3) I'd assume that they're combining the two networks into one, but then why the new phone? is this just a quicker fix than waiting for the towers in her area to be migrated to the new network? Will her old phone be able to connect using both cingular AND ex-ATT towers at any point in the future?
4) Many have said they were able to keep they're old ATT plan after buying a new cingular phone... but just to be sure I'll ask anyway.
It seems to me that she's being pressured into buying a new phone when in reality she's choosing between using the ATT towers (old phone) or Cingular towers (new phone)... until they upgrade her area at which point all phones will access both sets of towers.

1) Not really. They probably mean that the Cell Tower ID Banner says "Cingular" where it used to say "AT&T Wireless"
2) Nope. AT&T phones will pick up on Cingular towers if no (former) AT&T signal is avaliable.
3) Probably a way for cCingular to milk more money from us. AT&T phones are not programmed to accept Cingular SIMs and it's doubtful Cingular will ever make their SIMs work in AT&T phones. And yes, her phone is now able to connect to both towers (try this now by manually selecting the network on your phone)
4) you need to buy a 'debranded' phone, one that Cingular has programmed to work with AT&T SIMs. These are avaliable over-the-phone only, not in stores.

1) After the merger, AT&T towers were programmed to send out the Cingular banner. There's really no change in service in this aspect, its mostly superficial.
2) Depending on what type of phone you have. If you have an AT&T TDMA phone, or a locked GSM phone, you cannot get on both networks. You'd have to have a phone with a 64K sim, either from Cingular or unlocked with a Cingular sim. Otherwise, it'll only access the AT&T network.
3) See above answer. However, Cingular is in the process of integrating the "blue" and "orange" networks into a "gold" network, so by 2006 (at the very latest) you should be able to access the combined network using an AT&T or Cingular phone.
4) Either they had an unlocked phone, or thought they were keeping they AT&T plan but actually went to a similar Cingular plan. I've talked to several former blue customers who thought they were still on AT&T after they upgraded.
As an added note, if you want to keep your AT&T plan, you can do so as long as you don't upgrade. If you absolutely need a new phone, try to find an unlocked phone, or just buy an AT&T phone elsewhere, like eBay. There are phones floating around on the internet, so its not impossible.

u guyz seem very knowledgeable.here is my situation. use 5000-8000 minutes each month. have old att plan where its basicially $99 for unlimited use(cingular reps say never get rid of this plan, nothing similar for the $$$) & i also have insurance. ask "CINGULAR" BLUE" rep 2nite what phone is listed on my service\insurance.said NOKIA 7210 which i haven't had since 1st year available n states.lately i've had NOKIA 7250 & B4 that a SIEMENS small slider(forgot #), both which i got thru ATT reps.this is the last phone i used w\my SIM CARD but i lost it recently.dropped "7250" n water a couple of weeks B4 that. I want the unlocked sk65 by siemens-i know i would have 2 get on my own. if i get 1 unlocked will new SIM CARD, which i assume that i will get from ATT\CINGULAR BLUE\LOCKLINE insurance, definitely work w\my new SIEMENS SK65 ? What phone should insurance really replace ? don't really want NOKIA 7210 even as backup-i need a backup for sure w\my history-as always had trouble w\it awhile back & doubt if available anyway. if negotiating w\LOCKLINE to get a phone i want that CINGULAR offers like the LG a7110 or a MOTOROLA v551 how do i convince them not to just give me cheapest phone available ? will roll w\whatever if my new SIM works w\new SIEMENS SK65.
will new SIM work w\unlocked motorola a630 ? (like QWERTY KEYBOARD as i E-mail alot & now carry a small laptop for this.w\ a630 or SK65 i wouldn't have to keep laptop w\me) thanx n advance to anyone who can give advice. PS PLEAZ MOVE IF N WRONG SPOT OR IF I SHOULD HAVE STARTED NEW THREAD
