Im currently with a Cingular plan, but it is under my dad's name. My 2 year contract expires in December. I broke my phone a few days ago and I dont have insurance on it. I guess im not eligible for an upgrade until 2 months before my term expiration.
Would they let me break away from my dad's and start my own contract under my name only? That way i figure I could get a new phone free with new contract. What are my options here? Thanks!

From a Representative point of view, give us a call or have your dad give us a call. With a manager approval we can override the timeframe for your upgrade.
If you've been a good standing customer the past 12 months a manager can override the date you're eligible. (3 months before the end of the contract)
I just today upgraded a customer's phone with 4.5 months left before the end of the contract. 1.5 months ahead of time. It can be done. Just give us a call.
Be sure to have the last 4 of your dad's SSN or his password and the billing address.

Thanks for the quick reply! This might be a stupid question, but does the upgrade require me to sign another contract? I would imagine so...also what is the typical phone i would be upgraded too, how does that all work?
Thank you

Depends on what you want. You can select any phone you like. The upgrade goes based on pricing in conjunction with length of committment.
Yes youd have to renew for 12 or 24 months. The longer the contract the cheaper the phone is.

Would it be possible to get a better deal in person at a store, or should i just call Cingular corporate? How much would one of the razor phones be with a 12 month contract?
Btw, thanks for the help, I love the internet, so helpful..

With a 12 month renewal, you're looking @ 249.99. Right now the 24 month renewals are lookin around 179.99 to 199.99.
The store can upgrade you but the chances of them making an exception and doing it early are slim. They'd have to call Customer Care as well.
You can get a good deal in any one of these channels: Upgrading online within 3 months of your contract
Upgrading in a store/dealer/corporate store
Upgrading through Customer Care.

be careful when dealing with dealers/non corporate stores, as well as you cing contract they can also add there own stipulations as well like charging you there own contract term fee along w/ cingulars

I've got the "upgrade blues" as well. I'm not eligible until December but I've been a loyal Cingular customer for 5 years, got both my kids on my plan too. Cingular makes alot of money off me.
I went to the Cingular store and was told that even if I sign a new contract I cannot get anything off on a phone. In years past all I had to do was sign up for a couple more years to get the phone discount.
I want the SE S710a. The store was quoting me a price of over $400 for the phone without upgrade allowed. The website says that the phone is $299.
Should I just go to ebay?

I could recommend that or wait till within a month of the date they gave you. We can override the upgrade date, just not the pricing.

just an fyi with the "exeption " upgrade price it is usualy the 2 year renewal w/ a 1 year price if you dont "NEED" to replace the phone its always better to wait, when you wait the chances are good the phone will go down in price, if your phone is destroyed try ebay for a cheap replacement to tide you over till you can upgrade, just be careful when buying off ebay dont buy from someone w/ less that 98% and no negatives w/in 60 days
