I've went rounds with LG, the salespeople, and Verizon support. I blew the salepeople away when I showed them you cannot save a recorded voice note as a ringtone as you can on the VX300 and VX6100. Seems as thought that option is missing. Although the manual that came with it AND the latest manual on LG's site says you should be able to.
LG responded regarding the VX5200 - "Dear Michael, Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics. Unfortunately, voice recordings can not be set as ringtones. "
I wrote them:"Any of the other models allow you to save your own sounds a ring tones somehow? Like VX3300, VX4650, or VX6100?"
LG responded:"All listed models allow you to set voice memos as ringtones if you wish."
From Verizon I got: "You also would have the option of downloading ring tones for your
computer by purchasing a Mobil office kit when available. The standard price for this accessory is
$39.99. However because this is a new phone this is not available at this time. Get It Now is a
feature that Verizon Wireless offers this isn't a part of the equipment. However different phones do
offer different wallpaper. Because this is an issue for you I would advise to go into a store
location and review the equipment offered or go online and decide there is a different model that
better meets your need."
The salepeople at the office weren't aware that it wouldn't let you set a voice note/memo as a ringtone, nor send it to the phone, save it, and set it as a ringtone.
I honestly believe it got left out of the programming menu options. Why would all the other models provide that feature except for this one? Especially since it was noted in the manual to be there.
It does sound like "maybe"Mobile Office Kit" or www.datapilot.com might end up supporting that phone.
My problem is I'm still under my 15 days with Verizon so I might switch to the VX3300. It's cheaper and might have to live without the camera. It would save me money. I can't justify going to the VX6100 though just to get the ability to save a voice note as a ring tone when the 5200 has everything else.
I guess I hate being stuck with paying someone $2 a pop or so for ring tones and most of them bite. I want to find my own or make them and put them on the phone.

damn, i really was hoping there would be something out there...it makes no sense to be forced into buying ringtones and wallpaper for a phone that you paid for...i honestly believe that they should be free of charge..but hey, thats just me.

Here's a recently reply from Verizon:
***********
Due to new features and software changes, the LG 6100 was the last phone to come out with this
option to save a Voice Memo to ringtone. The LG 5200, Audiovox 8940, LG vx8100, etc, do not have
this option any longer.
Current phones are moving more towards options with direct downloaded applications and what's
called Mini SD cards to use as like a external hard drive to play applications like sound or video
clips on your phone.
As an owner of one of the newer phones, I can understand your frustration on this. Applications
and equipment features and options frequently change, so options similar to what was available in
the past could become available again. I will definitely pass this information from you along to
Marketing for consideration.

I agree with you sublime and so do others. We need to voice our opions back to the cell phone providers and manufacturers as to what features we want and fuss when it's taken away. I don't know who decided this but wasn't smart one bit.
Here was what I wrote back:
*******
It wouldn't be hard to look through some of the cell phone forums online and see that customers are asking about this feature and complaining about it. I'm not sure how Verizon or any company goes about deciding which features are important but the best way is to ask the people. Either through some sort of online forum or Verizon keeping in touch with forums that are already online to see what customers are doing and want.
People want to make their phones personal as they are. They want to customize them and part of that is the ringtones. Just like the cute covers, holders, flashing antenas, etc. If people enjoy their phones they're going to be happier. But take those features away and they're going to find one that still has it. Just like myself. I was not aware and neither were the salespeople at the store. I guess if I want that feature I have to go to the older VX3300. I won't have a camera but I can't afford the 6100, which I think will let you savve voice notes. I haven't checked with my neighbor who has one. But nevertheless I can't afford it really. It just seems a bit silly to take that feature away whens it's not that complicated to add it either. Better selling point than not having a feature customers want.

I'm within my 15 days and comtemplating just going back and getting the VX3300. It will save me money anyway.
