I have been on a GAIT phone for over three years, and now have a 1,000 min local multiband plan here in Texas, a carryover from the "good old days." And, I am out of contract.
I knew this forced change was eventually coming. The letter I got yesterday August 8, 2005 from Cingular says that by September 3, I must make a change, and I quote:
"Of course, you have the option of keeping your existing GAIT phone (note: I have the S46), but you will need to re-program it to operate on GSM only before September 3, 2005. After that date your phone will no longer operate on the TDMA system, and your rate plan will change to Cingular's GSM America Local $39.99 plan. (note: 400 anytime mins, no nights, no weekends, no mobile to mobile free) If you do not upgrade or re-program your phone by September 3rd, you will experience a degradation in your wireless service."
Never mind this is not a good way to treat a good customer, what is happening? Are they saying all TDMA signals are being shut off on that date, or is it that they're going after GAIT customers who are out of contract to force an upgrade or, if they hold out and stay out of contract, to put them on a lesser plan to make them "feel the heat?" Any Cingular reps out there who know what's happening? Thanks.

what they are saying is that multiband service will cease as of 3 sep 2005... TDMA service will still be there... your type of service is multiband which will no longer support a TDMA connection
you will most likely have fewer dropped calls as a result... multiband was a bandaid measure when gsm service was in its infancy...its a waste of time and money now
to switch your phone to gsm only
To Set the phone to GSM mode:
Press the RIGHT SOFTKEY labeled MENU.
Press - (Setup)
Press - (Network)
Press - (Configuration)
Press - (User Settings)
Scroll with the LEFT SOFTKEY to highlight the GSM only option.
Press the RIGHT SOFTKEY labeled Select
Display will say Please Wait and reboot

I'm grateful for your reply. I hope the GSM coverage area is as good as TDMA/AMPS is (correction: was). We can always hope. The cellular media report large investments in infrastructure in many states lately.
What do you suppose will happen to the TDMA only customers of AT&T?

But, what's the deal with the automatic change to the 39.99 plan? I don't use my phone enough to justify spending $40 a month. If Cingular wants to keep me as a customer, then they need to offer a $30 plan - like the one I already have. Based on the same letter that I recieved, I'm saying good bye Cignular.

They should not switch plans on people like that, and expecially not for less minutes (in my case) than are available to the ("real" ?*#!) Cingular customers get for their hard-earned money. They get 450 nationwide minutes for $39.99, and I as an AT&T "holdout" am getting 400 minutes, no nights, no weekends, no free calls to other Cingular people. Now, that smacks of extortion, if you ask me. And, I just don't like those business practices.

It amazing how bad of a rap Cingular has. I talked to a wireless rep today about switching plans. She recommened that I stay away from Cingular. I wonder how many $30/mo AT&T customers Cingular is going to lose with their latest notice? On the other hand, I've foudn that not many carriers offer a 30/mo plan. They're all greedy as hell to get peoples money. I remeber when they all used to offer $20/mo plans.
