Ok,
So...I signed up for a new plan and phone 3 days ago. I recieved an email the next day telling me what my number would be when I recieve the phone in the mail. The problem was, the area code of the number they gave me was 425 and my area code is 360! So I called I them and talked to somone who changed it to a 360 number and gave me some choices on the remaining 7 digits. I picked a number and my phone now shows the new number when I turn it on.
Here's my problem though...when people call me from their cell phones (so far) they can get through no problem with just the 7 digit number. However, when someone calls with a landline, they get an error that the number cannot be reached, unless they dial 1-360 first. This is really annoying. Why would a cell phone be able to connect and not a landline? And why would 2 numbers in the 360 area code need to dial a 1-360 before calling each other?
Thanks for any help with this matter...I've already emailed Cingular about it but I can't get any help from them until tomorrow so I thought I would try here first.

welcome to permissive dialling... it being phased in over the last couple of years... fairly soon everyone will have to dial at least 10 digits

Hi,
Yeah I agree...soon we will have to all do that. However, I have friends that live in my town who have Cingular and others do not need to dial a 1-360 in order to reach them. (which is long distance for the caller)

just because it has the same area code doesnt mean its not a "LD" call there are about 4 sarrounding citys where i live w/ the same area code, and when i call on i have to dial the full 11 didget number , it probably has a ld prfix w/ the area code, call back make sure you have a local prefix, the first 3 number of a phon number so it will be local

While we may very well have to do that in the future...this time it was just a mistake. I went into my local Cingular dealer yesterday and the rep. there said that the "list" that Cingular's customer service representatives look at does not have my city, Bellingham, on it. Instead, it is listed under the county that bellingham is located in, Whatcom. So, they didn't know what prefix to use and thus gave me one that was long distance for other people to call. All is well now though, he gave me a Bellingham number on the spot

Congrats! Rare that a store rep will fix a situation right there and then.
