Where did you place your MP3 files? You must place them under the Sounds Folder either in your phone or MMC(recommended) in order to use them as ringtones.
Regarding your SMS problem, it may be possible that you have filled up your phone memory. So either delete some of the messages in order to free up some space or move the message store to MMC. I am not sure through if 3230 allows that. It should be under "Other Settings" inside the "Message Settings". Please check the manual for further instructions.

Nokia 3230 allows mp3 ringtones. just move the ringtones to the MMC card location as Gallery->MMC(your MMC card)-> sound clips->digital sounds... if you do this you will be able to set them through the profiles menu. please don't keep mp3's, games, pics etc on your phone memory. always use the MMC for this... Use phone memory only for the messages, contacts and stuff like that

That is not true. The MMC requires power only when it is read from or written to. So if some app which continuously runs in the background is stored in the MMC, it will drain out the battery faster than if it is stored in the phone memory. Also access to the MMC takes much more time than the phone memory. So if your phone processor is sufficiently loaded and you set some Mp3/WAV and set it as the ringtone, then there is every possibility that it wont be found in time and the phone will ring with the default tones. So you need to judge and have a good reason why you would want to store something on the phone memory

You are absolutely correct . Thats the reason I said you must have a good reason for storing anything, repeat anything in the phone memory.
