I've had the same nokia phone, along with the same cell plan, since ~1999. It's falling apart basically, so I want a new one.
My question is: My plan (with cingular) also has been the same for years (was ATT before), and I'm long outside of any contract. If I go through buy.com, I can get a RAZR V3 (or some other phone, haven't decided) for a really good price with rebates. But will the new service still let me keep my number, while keeping my provider as well as the rebates?
Basically: Can I port my number from Cingular plan to Cingular plan, retaining the rebate's associated with starting up a new contract?
I'm sorry if this has been asked a lot or isn't appropriate, I did look through a bit to see if I could find anything relating to this, but didn't. I've tried to get an reply from contacting buy.com, but had no answer.

if you go to buy.com or amazon.com you will be establishing a new service...a new phone number....those sites are not cingular corporate sites... they offer rebates for new accounts only
if you want to keep your same number go to cingular.com or go to a store in person...you can call customer care as well and do it over the phone... you will get the upgrade price offered by cingular not the one offered by the dealers
The only problem with upgrading, is that you'll have to choose a new plan. If you have one of the old plans (Cingular Nation 250 for instance), you'll have to increase your plan to at least a Nation 450 Plan.

I need a new plan anyway (apparently 100 minutes a month isn't enough anymore )
So basically it comes down to wondering if I can get my cingular number moved over to another (new) cingular account. Seems that most sites will transfer an old number to a new account without problem.
If I wanted to go to verizon for instance, it would be a whole new account, but I can bring the number with me. My question is whether I can bring my number from a cingular account to a new cingular account, thus making me eligible for a cheap phone? A new plan isn't a problem.
Man, maybe I should just work a few extra hours and not bother with all this nonsense.

If you get a phone from Cingular and choose one that has a rebate, you can claim it. Cingular allows existing customers to claim reabates along with the brand new accounts. So you can get a good phone for cheap, if not free directly from Cingluar without worrying about 3rd party rebate restrictions.

if you do it all through cingular yes you can retain your number, if you go through a 3rd party whitch is NOT recomended then no you cannot retain you number, also ging throgh venders like buy.com, you also signing a contract w/ that company. They can also charge term fees, and to get the v3 rebate you have to stay on the same plan for 6 months, and NEVER have a late payment. Acctua you should also be able to transfer/port you out of contract number to a new accoutn as well but you have been forewarned about 3rd party vendors
