Hello folks,
Is there any way in which a Nokia 6600 can be made to play MP3 files as ringtones? I found a software called OpenOgg which incorporates the ogg codec into the Base Nokia MMF. Thus it can play Ogg files as ringtones. I was wondering if there is anything similar for MP3 too.
Thanks

it is possible to make mp3 as ring tone in 6600. firstly u need to install pc suite of 6600 in ur pc. now transfer the mp3 into the card memory . now it will be treated as a wave file and can be used as ringtone

Thanks for the reply. First of all Nokia PCSuite for 6600 doesn't run on Windows XP SP2. Secondly in the way you stated, it would still be a wave file and not a MP3 file. The main concern here is the balance between size and quality.Thanks.

a) mp3s can't be used as ringtones
b) yes, they will be wave-files, but compressed and mono (why stereo if the phone is mono?) and smaller than the original mp3 (unless the mp3 is already in a small, crappy bitrate )
PC Suite converts it perfectly. Not too much size, not too less quality.
If you prefer controlling it yourself get a audioeditor which lets you choose the audiocodec you want to use for the saved wave-file (like Goldwave, Windows built-in Audiorecorder).
The codec you would need to use is IMA ADPCM.

Thanks Bjoern for the reply. I have got hold of a copy of Goldwave. It allows me to convert to IMA ADPCM. But not to 16KHz. IT allows me to do it at 11K and higher than that is 22K. However the best sounding ringtones are all 16K. Can you suggest some utility which allows to encode at 16K?
Thanks

Never mind. I found the answer myself. AFAIK there are no native Window utilities to do the job. However a software called SOX, a port from Unix, can convert to IMA ADPCM at 16KHz. It is a command line utility though.
