I received few text messages from unknown people. After checking with the senders, it turned out that they sent the text messages to wrong number. As the result, I was charged 5 cents for each message.
If I never use my phone to send or receive text messages (or access internet), and would like to use it as a regular cell phone just for talking, how can I disable this feature from my current family plan? I just don't want to be charged 5 cents everytime when anybody sends me a text message.
I heard about setting a spam & keyword filter under communication tools in my.t-mobile.com account. Can this prevent me from getting text messages from anybody and being charged for the text messages?
BTW, if I can disable text messaging, can I still get official messages (like my.t-mobile.com password or the #MIN# minute checking) from T-Mobile?
Thank you

T-Mobile does not allow users to remove the ability to recieve text messages because we communicate with our customers in that fasion occaisionally. You can however remove text message sending ability. There is no way to stop the unwanted messages. Customer care might be able to credit you, but if it continues to happen you are best off doing a mobile number change.
The spam & keyword filter works for just that...spam. For instance if you kept getting some type of auto insurance ad from the number 58745 you would be able to block 58745. Since you don't know who will message you it is impossible to set up a block for all the possible numbers.
I understand how this may be frustrating for you, but currently these are the only options.

Thanks for the reply, Technical Care.
About the spam & keyword filter, the Customer Care representative I talked with suggested me to set a filter like this:
If From Does not contain (my phone number) Then Do not send to handset and do not forward
She said this can block all messages, but warned me not to forget my.t-mobile.com password because it can also block the password message from t-mobile as well. So, I currently come up with a revised filter:
If Subject Does not contain T-Mobile Then Do not send to handset and do not forward
I use the word T-Mobile in the filter because I noticed that both the welcome message and the password message contain this word. I would like to share this filter with everybody who is in the same situation as mine: use the phone just for talking.
BTW, do you know whether the filter blocks all messages (both e-mail messages and text messages) or just e-mail messages?
Thank you

The filter will block messages sent to yournumber@tmomail.net It will not stop text messages. Customer care is definitly trying to help you here and I give them an E for effort, but working on the network side I know for a fact if someone mistypes a phone number for a text message it will be coming to your phone.

Receiving few text messages by senders' mistake does not hurt my wallet much. So far I have got only 2 text messages for this first month. I can live with that.
Because the filter blocks all e-mail messages, half of the trouble is prevented. If someones really want to spam me by sending text messages, they must have very strong fingers so that they can type my number into their phone many times. And if that ever happens, I know what to do now from your replies.
Thank you Technical Care for making it clear to me.

I have not looked at the spam/keyword filter for a while, but isn't there a setting so you will ONLY receive a sms when they sent it to yournumber@tmomail.net? Most text messaging isnt done this way, so you figure it would block most mistakes.

I would like to completely remove text messages from my teenagers phones (incoming/outgoing) so they will use just the phone. I also agree how can a customer be responsible for incoming text messages. We did not generate them. I would like to find a way to block all text messages on my phones. Oh Yeah I have T-Mobile. I have unlimited text messaging but I am taking that away from my kids. Getting out of control and the content of their conversations is totally unappropriate for this age.

I have called tech support several times and can only disable spam text messages, not phone text messages (as mentioned earlier.) I found someone who says this works (for a RAZR V3.
(Select or Click)
Menu
Messages (takes me to Message Center)
Menu (takes me to Message Center Menu)
Inbox Setup
Txt Msg Setup
Srvce Center No.
I deleted my last digit and clicked OK
No more 15 cents per received txt message. Take that T-mobile tech support.

I am also hoping your suggestion works. I have been fighting with T-Mobile customer service on this issue for over a year. My son does great at not sending any texts, but his friends will not respect his request that they not send text messages to him - resulting in a charge of a couple bucks every month.
