Ok, so I'm looking at getting a Cingular setup but I really dont want to start the process of porting my number over from verizon till I've had some time to make sure that the cingular network will work for me.

What I'd like to do is just get a Cingular setup and test it out for the 30 days while still maintaining my Verizon phone while testing connectivity while I travel.

If I try to port my verizon number over to cingular after I've already established a Cingular account is Cingular going to try to make my life miserable?icon_frown.gif

Don't switch to Cingular Verizon -> Cingular portability is easy, however Cingular will not release your numberto Verizon if you want to switch out. May I add that's one of their many illegal practices that class action suits have been filed against them for. I have phones from all carriers for engineering work I do and trust me, stick with Verizon. The billing errrors that Verizon makes are nothing compared to what you'll see with Cingular. Please trust me on this one.

first of all it is illegal to not release a number.MOST complaints come from people who are told BY VERIZON REPS to cancel their account with Cingular before coming to activate with them. Then for obvious reasons, the number can't be ported.

if you could please furnish some links to information regarding class action suits against Cingular for this reason, please do so. if not, then stop spreading false information.

Billing issues are usually due to a customer "not knowing" how they went over their minutes, or not understanding how prorates work.

My advice to you, wolfen42:
1. buy from a store, NOT ONLINE OR OVER THE PHONE.
2. make friends with your sales rep. - they will help you in the store if you ever have billing or service issues.
3. part of #2 - buy features, even is a few small ones (insurance, txt package, etc.) your sales rep will want to keep you as a customer.
4. Use your 30-day return policy. If you like what you get, and service is good in your area, by all means, you won't regret switching.

i would also like to see some proof of these so called class action law suits, because if there were so many they would be all over the news, the reason they arnt is peopl try to get them they spennd alot of money on a lawyer and then cing just pulls out that contract they signed and the t&c of the contract and thats the end of that

Here's one that involves contract disputes with tower lease locations...

https://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/antenna_classaction

Kahn Gauthier is looking to file suit for roaming charge iiregularities.

Last year the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights filed suit against locking phones. It was basically against all GSM providers, Cingular included. Those that have read my previous posts know how I feel about this... They also filed a suit against Cingular for failure to provide services.

Cingular and others are involved in a suit alleging that ringtone downloads are misleading. http://news.com.com/Teens+dialing+up+ring+tone+trouble/2100-1039_3-569 2489.html

On the other side there was the well documented attempt by ATT and Cingular to delay number portability.

There was the Springfield IL Cingular action where they were found to be working call center employees off the clock. The settlement was US$1.5 million.

Of course there was the DOJ suit regarding divestiture prior to the merger.

Cingular has had many suits filed against them, as well as filing many suits against others. All in the course of business, I suppose. To think that Cingular might be immune to other larger suits, just look at what happened in the iPod battery suit.

First of all, those links did not provide proof that Cingular is in a class actions uit for porting issues.

Secondly, the ringtone suit is mainly against Jamster, who is the one with the deceptive practices. they lumped Cingular and T-mibile in there since they figured it would make better press. Cingular has nothing to do with Jamster - different companies. Its just a bunch of parents who don't keep an eye on their own kids and got pissed when they saw their kids were racking up stuff. These are the same people that think carriers having pay-per-use interent available on the phones is a trick to make more money, since people hit the button by accident (RTFM) PLUS in the artice it is stated:

-----------------------
Still, a crackdown of sorts has begun. A handful of North American and European operators are now at work on a code of conduct for ring tone sellers, due for release in 30 days, according to Paul Palmieri, executive director of business development and programming for Verizon Wireless.

Some operators aren't waiting. Cingular Wireless, the top U.S. operator, increased on Monday the number of approvals ring tone sellers must get from customers before finalizing any sale.
-------------------------

Every carrier was trying to delay number portability at one time. the timetable that was set was a difficult one. but we met the goals and from what my customers tell me, our ports are the fastest of anyones.

The DOJ situation i don't remember being called a suit, but in any case, that was simply because Cingular's and ATTW's licences would exceed allowable limits in some areas, and Cingular agreed to divest some makets and in some cases trade areas with regional companies without problem.

every company has their share of lawsuits, but this guy was making it sound like we have an army of lawyers beating down our door.

U.S. JUDGE DISMISSES CELL PHONE LAWSUITS
Bloomberg News - August 31, 2005
NEW YORK - A federal judge dismissed yesterday antitrust lawsuits claiming that Cingular Wireless LLC, Verizon Communications Inc. and two other mobile phone companies illegally forced customers to buy phones that only worked on their own networks. U.S. District Judge Denise Cote threw out allegations in a group of lawsuits claiming that the requirements constitute an illegal tying arrangement under antitrust law.
