Are customers from Louisiana and other affected states being sent a bill for the cell phone usage? The phones dont work, most of us are homeless, and computers are down because theyre wet. We have to rebuild everything. How can we possibly pay for it when we have to rebuild houses, buy gas, etc. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. Thanks.

I wouldn't be suprised if Cingular added a "Hurricane Wireless Tower Repair Surcharge" to it's customers to help pay for their downed towers. Cingular is a SICK and immoral company. You can rest assure that your bill will arive on time with at least the amount due that you actually agreed to. You can also rest assure that the hurricane damage will disrupt customer service and network service.
I feel terrible for all those suffering on the Gulf Coast right now. To think the damage could have been greatly lessened if the Bush administration had approved the Army Core of Engineers request to reinforce the retaining walls.
My sincere best wishes to all those suffering down there right now.

The only info they are giving out right now is available at http://www.cingularhurricaneupdates.com.
My suggestion to you would be to not worry about a cell phone bill, as there are certainly more important things to worry about. People are trying to survive and check on family members whom they've lost contact with, a cell phone should be the last thing on your mind.
My heart goes out to you, and I hope that you and yours are all as safe as possible.

actualy no it wouldnt have , they have said many times the repairs wouldnt have even been done in time to make any differance, and cingular is a coporation, like all corp, there goal is to make money, cell phones are a luxury do you think gm and for are going to tell the people who bought large vehicals, oh well seeing how gas is so expencive dont worry about paying for your truck???? no cing might let people who need to waive the etf so they wont have to worry about paying for a service they wont be able to use.

Exactly. This is America, home of the heartless. Big corporations are only out to make as much money as possible, and maybe donate a portion back to Red Cross for good publicity. Cingular, Ford, GM, the oil companies, your utility and mortgage companies, they're all the same. Get over it.

So move. This is a capitalist market driven free enterprise country. You have a cell phone? You have a car? You buy gas? etc... Home of the heartless? I don't think so. How much did you personally give to charity last year...

Ripped, in response to your original post, here is a partial response I was given by our correspondence team (i've removed any proprietary information that could get me in trouble):
Customers with an affected area code may be calling to cancel service in light of their loss of home and/or job. We will ask the customers if they are sure they want to cancel as the cell phone may be their only means of communication and make appropriate save attempts.
If they still want to cancel, as a last resort, offer the Disaster Suspension at no charge:
No MRC, taxes and fees through Nov. 30.
If no action is taken by Nov. 30, the account is cancelled.
All additional features and services are also suspended.
Existing Rollover balances are forfeited.
If the customer still wants to cancel, cancel the account (using special disaster termination code). We will not be charging the early termination fee for any affected customers.
Note that this is only valid for customers who have area codes from areas affected by Katrina.
As far as billing customers who do not call in to cancel or suspend their service, i'm sure it'll be a while before a bill is sent anyway, considering that no one in most of those areas (especially New Orleans) are able to recieve any type of mail or notices, and the network is down. Cingular isn't even active in most of these areas right now.
I'll continue to keep you posted on how this is going to work out, but the higher-ups are probably still figuring it out themselves.

In general for most companies in these cases, bills are still sent from the automated billing systems, but the post office of course will not be able to deliver them in this situation. Think the PO holds and trys to deliver for 30 days, and then returns the bill as "undeliverable" to the respective sending company. I'm sure each and every company is determining how best to handle this situation.

Sprint Nextel will automatically issue credits for monthly service for its wireless customers in the areas hardest hit by the hurricane. In addition, wireless customers in the affected areas will receive free long distance calling, roaming and text messaging and overage charges will not be applied.
Hopefully, other cell phone carriers will follow suit.
