That's just how motorola does it. That's a small price to pay for all the other stuff teh RAZR can do.
On an almost related note ... I hooked up the funlights on my RAZR and now I can't receive incoming text messages. I can make outgoing messages but I just can't get them. Does anyone know a seem fix or something i can try?
Thanks:

Wirelessly posted (Motorola v188 on t-mobile: MOT-V188/0B.D2.30R MIB/2.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0)
there's another thread on this topic floating around and in it someone suggested having a separate numbered entry for people such that the name comes up with voice calls but the number for sms. kind of an annoying kludge, but it works, apparently.

No solution according to Motorola. Spoke with a tech rep just two days ago and although he tried to find a solutions said "it appears that was the way it was designed". Kind of a bummer because I really like this phone. Never had this problem with any other. Only solution is to turn ringer ID's off or delete the ringer ID's for the people that text you most I guess. I only have ringer ID's for about 6 different people in my phone book, but being realistic, you give ringer ID's to the people that call you most. Those people are often those who text you most too. A longer ringtone to me means someone is 'calling' me, a short little tone tells me someone just left me a message or sent me a text. But now I can't tell the difference between the two if my phone is in another room or in my backpack.

Delete the two .db files in the audio folder and restart the phone

There is no solution... it's just how motorola phones are set up, the only real solution would be write the software yourself

There is a workround which involves having the number recognised differently - you need to edit SEEM 0032_0001 offset 3E - bit 4: for purposes of linking name in phonebook with caller ID number, xxx-xxxx = xxx-xxx-xxxx = 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx = +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx (0 on, 1 off)
