There is a workround which involves having the number recognised differently - you need to edit SEEM 0032_0001 offset 3E - bit 4: for purposes of linking name in phonebook with caller ID number, xxx-xxxx = xxx-xxx-xxxx = 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx = +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx (0 on, 1 off)
Set it to off
I tried this workaround on my KRZR K1 which is suffering from the same call/message ringer problem, but to no effect.
- The SEEM edit functioned exactly as described (e.g. a phonebook entry "yyy-zzzz" no longer matches an incoming call from "1-xxx-yyy-zzzz", as it does without the edit).
- HOWEVER, it did not fix the call/message ringer ID problem.
This solution relies on the claim that incoming MESSAGE ID's have a different format (include international prefix) from incoming CALL ID's (no international prefix). In my case, that wasn't true. With phone book entries like "1-xxx-yyy-zzzz", both calls and messages were matched and set off the same ringer ID. Maybe my provider or the provider from which the message originates has some effect of the incoming MESSAGE ID format.
Has this workaround worked for ANYONE. If so, on which phone, S/W or provider?
BTW: My Wife has a KRZR K1m (CDMA) with Verizon FLEX and it doesn't have this problem. This reassures me that there might be some configuration (maybe SEEM) that will force the underlying software to behave sensibly.

I just received a new Razr which has a date code in April 2007 and it still rings the same ringtone for an incoming call and SMS text message, when a phonebook entry is assigned a ringtone. I agree with all the others here in that this feature is VERY annoying and I can't imagine what the Motorola software writers were thinking. No other phone I've ever used (and I've used a lot) has ever worked this way. As mentioned above, the SEEM edit floating around doesn't always work, and may be carrier-specific. (Besides the time-consuming issue of downloading and learning all of the SEEM editors and the risk of phone damage.) If Motorola would just come out with a flash load that changed this feature back to the way it was, then it would simply be a short trip to a sales store for a re-flash for those of us that want to assign ringtones, but desire the global text alert for all entries. Or better yet, give us the choice to assign both an incoming call alert and an incoming SMS alert to each entry.

Just received an official response from Motorola in an e-mail exchange on their web site. They are "Sorry to inform you that this feature is unavailable in this phone."
I'm seriously thinking of going back to my v710, as this ringtone issue is not the only annoying thing about this new RAZR. Just found out that I cannot edit quickkey #1 (voicemail) to have pauses and my password automatically entered. I have to go into the message menu and dial voicemail from there to do that. This RAZR is a big step backwards in my opinion.

Okay, so once you have your Ringer IDs set all you have to do is go to is this:
1. Go to Menu.
2. Click settings.
3. Click "Audio".
4. Click "Loud Detail".
5. Go down to "Text msgs".
6. Click Change.
7. Change to the sound you prefer. "Notify, Attention, ect."
7 easy steps, hope they help. =]

Hi, hope someone can help. Recently got my V3 and have set up ringtones for certain people in my phonebook. Trouble is, whenever I receive a text message from these people the entire ringtone plays, not the SMS sound! Pretty annoying when an mp3 tune plays for 20 seconds for just a text message!
I used to have a Motorola V600 and this didnt happen. Can someone tell me how to fix this problem?
Thanks

well, the problem is that the ringer ID (say, set for person A) plays when person A is calling you, and also when person A is texting you. the ringer ID is a "priority" over the text alert sound.
no offense intended, really, but the solution you provided was already suggest by the second post
