Anyone have any suggestions where I can get my Nokia 6610 unbranded in NY? I asked at a couple of the shops around me - Broadway and high 20's - and they have not heard of this. I have what used to be a T-mobile phone but I want to put the generic Nokia firmware on it. Anyone have any suggestions? I would rather bring it into a store rather than mail it out.
Thanks!!!

You can't. Its against the service agreements between Nokia and T-Mobile. They wont do it for you.

So why doesn't T-mobile or Cingular shut down iunlock.com?

Because unlocking of a phone is not illegal. When you are paying for a phone you have full rights to decide whether you want to use the phone or keep it as a showpiece. The whole idea here is Nokia won't do it for you. Now if you manage to get it done from outside its none of their business.

And also there is a difference between simple unlocking and unbranding.
Unlocking could be illegal if the provider has explicit forbidden it in the contract.

Well the phone I was manufactured in '03, which means that it is probably after the 2 year contract that the original owner signed up for. It has been unlocked, and works fine with other SIM's. As it is off of contract, I should be able to do whatever I want with it. I never signed up with T-Mobile, so I don't have a contract with them either.

Unfortunately these kinds of complications arise when you buy refurberished products. As far as I know, if YOU sign up for a Plan called ABC from company XYZ, you are not entitled to sell out the phone because as per company records the phone remains a property of the original owner and anything happens to the phone, the original owner remains responsible. So it is a direct violation of the Customer and Company agreements. Both of you could be sued for this. You can also try speaking to your lawyer if you can sue the original owner for selling you a product he was not supposed to sell. In this way you can also extract the money to buy a new 6680

Not sure where you are located, but standard US contracts state the the owner gains ownership at the end of the contract, or if subscriber decides to change providers prior to the end of the contract, then that subscriber has to pay a hefty cancellation fee to make up for the subsidy in the purchase of the phone.
For instance, I am near the end of my two year contract with Verizon. Come December, the Samsung a530s that I have and detest is mine. I can then throw it off a building, into the ocean, or sell it on ebay in order to buy a 6680...

Just to add to that, if I cancel prior to December, I have to pay $150 in cancellation charges.
