I know this is soooo old, I read all the replies, but I'm still confused. I've been told by someone personally that they asked for the transcripts of what was texted on their account and they got it, to find out that their husband was cheating.
Now some people are saying these contents aren't stored at all. But some others are saying if they got subpeonaed (sp?) then they could be retrieved. Which is it? And if there was a nasty divorce going on, could one of the participants get that info, if they were the primary account holder even?

that person was out and out lying about the text message transcripts.
subpoena all you want. if the info aint there. it aint there
the account holder can only obtain BILLING information . that is ALL that is stored.that includes call detail AND text detail. the definition of detail in this case is the number called and the number received. NOT the verbiage

It is not possible for the server to possibly house all the messages that people on the AT&T network send and recieve everyday. It would be an IT and logistical NIGHTMARE. *sigh*
With that said, no, it is not possible for anyone to get what a message says. The account holder is able to get the time, date, and number that messages were sent to or received from, but that's it. And even then, part of AT&T's privacy policy is that they cannot give any customer's phone number out over the phone.
So, if you're calling AT&T trying to find out if your spouse is cheating on you, and you tell the rep there that you want to get all the phone numbers that your significant other has been sending texts to, you're SOL because they won't do it. All they would be able to do is refer you to the web site to veiw the information there. AND if you're on a business plan, you're even more SOL, because business plans do not have internet access.
So, all in all, no, not possible to view text messages, either online, or even if the message info is supeonaed (I can't spell, I know).
Rule of thumb, if you get a threatening message, SAVE IT TO YOUR PHONE, or even better yet, if you've got the space, SAVE IT TO YOUR SIM, or also, SAVE IT TO YOUR SD CARD!
Okay, I'm done.

That is absolutely not true. The IT Logistical Nightmare Stuff, I am an Enterprise Network Architect. I can tell you with the multi-petabit sans that are in place. With our route and switch faster than ever we can archive whatever we please. The Fact is that with Voice Mail stores alone this would not be some kind of logistical nightmare. It is automated and easy the same as your bill. It can be done but is it willingly done on behalf of the carrier is another guess completely. Unlike the last person that answered it is completely possible to view text messages on line. Currently T-Mobile and I believe AT&T ( last one not sure about ) allow you to send text messages online. Plus with more and more people utilizing SMS in the Courts of law, this makes it more and more practical to see coming down the road way. We are quickly seeing Carriers pounce on Unified Communications, from your current phone call sent over SIP to there DAX to the PSTN or On Net if possible for them,, to there MMS it is coming. The questin is not IF its when? And just to reiterate yes the carriers do have the capability to record your text messages. Do they don't know.

A couple of things about your post.
First, especially coming from a seemingly smart guy, this post is almost incomprehensible. Go back and try to edit this to be more coherent.
Second, it's never been said that it's NOT possible, not by me, anyway. And it's been said that test messages can be summoned and retrieved by the courts.
Tell you what.if this is possible, and if you are as smart as you say you are, then go and retrieve some text messages online and post the screenshots here for us to see. Provide the links and other proof that the the page is genuine and not a mock-up.
I'm waiting.
