EDGE is automatically turned on with your phone. Now only 90% of our towers are EDGE enabled so if you are not on a EDGE enabled tower you will get the regular gprs speed. As for delays or lag with text messaging and aim what are we talking about?
Is it a delay in sending the message or loading the program or creating the message?
If it is a delay in the message you need to remove your battery while your phone is on.
If it is the phone lagging while you are performing these tasks then you may need to get the phone and a slim chance the sim card replaced.

I'm not sure I understand what lag you mean? I sent a text message to my wife and got a response in 30 seconds. Can't comment on AIM cause I don't use it. Just my 2cents.

how do you know EDGE isn't working for you? EDGE is not blazing fast you realize this right? It is a minor speed upgrade to GPRS. No where near broadband speeds.
As for the lag on your phone try a master reset in your settings>initial setup>master reset. It will ask for the code use 000000. If this does not improve the lag I would say take it back to the store if you are within 14 days or if it is past that time call customer care for an exchange. The same thing happened to me on my v300 on multiple occasions and a master reset always fixes it for me.
