I bought a GSM phone so that I could use it on other networks. (I bought it years ago not understanding about locking) This whole process of locking phones is absurbed. The cellular companies have contracts to protect them against phones subsidized by them switched to other networks.
I simply want to have my T720 from AT&T unlocked so that people I will be visiting can call a local number while I am in Canada for one week using Rogers or Fido. And Cingular (AT&T switchover branch) will not unlock my phone. I am still under contract, so I am not going anywhere. I do not want to send my phone somewhere. I do not want to flash new firmware. I do not want to buy a new phone. I just want to accept calls and make calls temporarily. I do not need data support. I will even use Cingular roaming in Canada. Ugh!
These phone companies are probably losing more business since this prevents other users from switching to their network and it probably all balances out. I think locking phones should be made illegal. It sort of defeats the purpose of GSM if you ask me.

Yeah but the company that buys the phones from the manufacturer and sells them to you, loses money when you use another carrier internationally.

I understand that they will win some and lose some, and that probably in the end they would balance out and the end users would be happy. I am sure they have thought of this and I am only an end user and the wireless companies have decided that locking phones is the best aproach. I undertsnad your point. I am just frustrated due to my own situation.
