Please check and make sure you got the right cable and software. Cable that is compatible to E730 included the cables for the following models only. Others probably will not be compatible.
D500 / D508 / E730 / E738 / P735
As for the software, you need the PC Studio PIMS ver 2.0:
http://www.samsung.com/au/support/productsupport/download/Model_Select .aspx?type=Mobile+Phone&typecode=18&subtype=Mobile+Phone&cmssubtypecod e=1805&model=SGH-E730S&filetype=SW&language=
Edited - I saw your other post that the cable came with the phone so it should be the right cable. If the software is also come with the phone then it should be the correct software as well. Then just check the setup of PIMS to make sure it already selected the cable for communication.
After you installed the usb driver, you need to go to Device Manager and find which COM port is assigned to the usb driver as you need to use that in PIMS setup for Ports.

The PC studio 2 disc came was included and i used that to dl the pim and file managers. the model of the usb is PCB113BSE, which was also included with the phone. So everything should be correct i hope, but yet the computer doesn't detect my phone. Where is the Device Manager?

I am having exactly the same problem, also received cable and disk with phone. The computer detects the phone through PC Sync but not with the Studio 2. All is set to Com 5 which is enabled. I have, once, been able to download my phonebook from my phone and a photo but cannot upload anthing as I get the same message, "cannot open port and device is set offline".

smilin0685,
Right click My Computer on PC's Desktop and select Properties. Then Hardware follow by Device Manager. See if you can find any usb cable thing and see if it specifies any COM port at the end of the line.
cazzieg,
See if changing the speed in PIMS setup will help or not. Try higher speed other than 115200 one by one.
If the aboves doesn't help, I suppose you guys should call Samsung and ask for their help.

Thanks js1662, doesn't help.
I cannot but help think that this is really something silly but don't know as I just plugged the phone in to try your suggestions and PC Sync instantly picked it up. I'll see if I can get hold of someone in Samsung, although in this part of the world that is not always easy. Again, thanks for your help, any other suggestions gratefully received.

For Information I have received the following from Samsung Middle East, don't know if it works as I'm not home yet but will let you know:
"Thank you for your email.
Please check if 'SGHE730' appeared at the bottom
next to the light bulb icon? If not, you will need to reinstall the software.
See procedure below for reference.
1. Install USB driver
2. Install PIM + File Manager
3. Connect phone to computer. Computer will search for appropriate driver
and install automatically. You will click 'Continue Anyway' in some warning
messages.
4. Find out the vertual port for this connection (control panel phone
& modem option modems).
5. Set up the port no. to PIM
If you connected the phone before USB driver installation. You will need
to remove the USB installation and restall again. Becaue the MS Window may
pick up a wrong USB driver."
All the spelling mistakes were their own!

Just to update: I followed Samsung's instructions and all I could do was download from phone to laptop. However, I installed everything fresh on a desktop and 'wonderful' it all worked.
I did the following once the software was installed; into file manager, opened phone (top left) clicked on music, then on the track I wanted to upload (bottom right) and the upload icon came on.
I'm going back to Samsung regarding the Laptop so I'll keep you posted
