I tried to cram all the topics in the subject line. If the powers-that-be want me to seperate them into a topic for each question that's cool. answers in bold
Is there any way to change the text size on the phone? I'm open to hacking firmware when I do get a cable if necesary. -- no, anything MDIP 2.0 can't change font at least according to the knowledge base on motocoder.com
Issues with WlIrc and jmIrc - namely that they won't connect. I've narrowed it down to 2 possibilities based on various posts with other motorola phones and providers: either motorola isn't allowing network access to an unsigned-by-motorola midlet -or- T-Mobile is not running true GPRS allowing HTTP and is going through a WAP proxy. For now I'm using wap.steike.com which works for the most part but isn't as full-featured as I'd like. -- Motrola says http is supported in all MDIP 2.0 phones and that the Java settings can be different from other web settings. I'm inclined to think, since I can't access any of the web/network settings in the phone, that one or more of these is not set and I either have to re-flash/flex the phone to unbrand it and get generic settings back or call t-mobile and see what they say.
Are there Linux drivers for the USB cable? -- yes, with some kernel hacking. I've found both modem kernel drivers and a program called kmobiletools, linked below.
Using the phone as a comptuer internet device does it work over GPRS or CSD. I.e. do I have to have a seperate dialup provider to dial into or is it just going to work with my T-MobileWeb subscription? Does it appear to be a USB NIC or USB Modem to the computer? -- Modem but I haven't found a definite answer for the CPRS/CSD part.
Are there any firmware or other software upgrades available? I know it's only a month old but I also know that patches for stuff are often released right after a product goes to market.
a more general question: Is iTAP's memory based on # of things or time? It seems to forget things I've typed out before after a couple days but I'm wondering if it's time-based or just remembering other things that's making it forget older things. Is there any way (firmware hacking or otherwise) to get it to remember more stuff? -- # of things based on some observation, nothing concrete to back this up.

hmm, can't edit from the phone. I realized after posting how ungrateful and impatient that was. at this point being told to use the search and/or google better would be fine, i'd just need some better keywords. I even promise to share my answers here for other's benefit.

I found some generic lines to add to the linux kernel (google "motorola linux phone drivers usb") to make the Vxxx gsm phones work as modems in 'nix. I'll keep searching on the syncing to computer.
Heck, as fast as 'nix devel goes, I could just plug it in once I get the cable and see what happens. It may Just Work(tm).
ETA: there's a program called kmobiletools tha appears to handle plenty of phones (though the v188 isn't listed, i'll see what I can do anyway. Gotta get the cable and do some hacking this weekend)[/url]

I've found a handfull of answers and guesses based on readings on motocoder.com and threw them in the original post.
Anyone with real answers is of course welcome to reply.

http://tuxmobil.org/phones_survey_motorola.html
well, that's the motorola page, http://tuxmobil.org/ is the main page. For all things mobile (TuxMobil: Linux with Laptops, Notebooks, PDAs, Mobile Phones and Portable Computers)
and another one: http://easyconnect.linuxuser.hu/modules/index/
or am I the only linux user here?
