I think Germany can be credited with having plenty of individuals who are good at putting their foot in it.
A few years ago my parents went on holiday to Germany. The hotel was way up in the mountains and half the guests were invalid, elderly or in wheelchairs. The hotel mini-bus (prolly a recycled JU52) used to give up the ghost half way up the mountain leaving them all stranded until another replacement could be found. Outside the hotel was an old WWII bomb that the manager claimed was dropped by British forces, every time they walked past it. The breakfast menu advertised a "full English Breakfast" of cereal followed by egg, bacon, sausage, fried bread/toast, mushrooms and tomatoes. When ordered, it was just 1 egg and 1 slice of bacon.
When some of the guests complained, the hotel manager, in true Gestapo style, cancelled the days daytrip, confined all the guests to the hotel grounds for the day and proceeded to give them a lecture on human rights and how to be grateful, finishing with the statement "You weren`t invited to Germany. You didn`t have to come to Germany" At which point my father stood up and said "We didn`t have to come in 1944, but you ba***rds wouldn`t behave yourselves"

That they are very gruff, mean people.
I don't think this is true, cause I know a few German people and they are very kind and nice.

As you say you only know a few Germans. I know a few Germans who are very kind and nice. I`ve also met a few like my parents friend. It is true btw. I forgot to mention that 18months later his hotel was dropped by the tour company due to further complaints being lodged by other guests.

Some are gruff and mean...
In my opinion mainly people around 50-60, but even the young ones can be mean.
We still do have some problems with rightist extremist... but in some way every country has its problems with rightist extremist, unfortunatly in Germany it went out of control in the past.
About two weeks ago we got elections... the NPD (Nationale Partei Deutschlands - National Party of Germany), a rightist extremist party (which unfortunatly can't be banned by law) got 1.6% (~770.000) of the votes... pretty high in my opinion...
These idiots even stood infront of schools and distribute CDs for free with music of rightist extremist bands...
Fortunatly many students gave their CDs directly to their teachers.
A leftist party offered the students concert ticket and other stuff in exchange for these CDs.
Overall they are good to laugh at...
The high unemployment in Germany filles people with bitterness... and many see foreigners as the cause of it.
Partially it is true, but it is only true because they work good for their money, many Germans say "Hey, why work for such little money when I get the same money from the state?" (this was even the statement of somebody in a talkshow!).
When I see every year the poles come to work in Germany durring asparagus harvest season... they work very hard for the money, they get here in two weeks as much money as they earn in Poland in a few months... many Germans quit after one day, because they say the money isn't worth that hard work...
We are lazy people

The modern, open minded people are, that's true...
I personal think "Borders are only in our heads"... if you're nice to me, I'm nice to you...
But I also do have prejudices too... but not against a group of people, against individuals... sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong...
