Hey all... like a ton of other typical college students, I dropped my phone in a beer. Now, I had a vx4400 and dropped it in water, and got it working again AFTER I had paid $50 for a new one cause I had insurance. Since I *generally* take care of my phone, I dropped the insurance when I got my new vx6100. Good call.
Okay... dropped it in beer. Took the battery out, dried everything with a fan overnight... worked fine. A couple of the buttons are a little sticky, but hey... it works. I took it apart and dried the insides and the buttons got somewhat better, but the 4 and 6 are still a little sticky.
Today, the phone has been randomly shutting off. About 80% of the time, when I boot it up, I get "USE GENUINE BATTERY" and it shuts off. I of course am using a genuine battery. Has the battery just coroded? Would buying a new one fix it?
Also, and this is important... how PINK does the battery indicator have to be to prove it was wet? It just has a couple little tiny weak patches of pink, but is overall purple. Is this enough to void the warranty? Also, if I buy a new battery, could I send it back then... as the new battery indicator says it is dry?
Any fixes for the phone shutting off? I think I read somewhere about soaking it in clean water with no battery and letting it dry out again. Suggestions, anyone? Thanks!

Had a friend that dropped his samsung in that water. He dried his phone, but it didnt turn on. He tried another battery, and it worked fine. Most likely the battery is fried. If I were you, I would buy a new phone battery on eBay. They go for about ten bucks. If you dont trust ebay, go get one at the verizon store.
Hope this helps, starwarsfan

Anyone else confirm that this is just a battery issue? Would cleaning contacts or such help?

My vote would be for the new battery.
No doubt the alcohol has taken it's toll on it.
Have you tested the battery with a volt meter or anything ?
As far as the pink patches, I'd think they'd probably say it was wet if there were just microscopic pink spots, but that just my opinion.
Good luck with whatever ya do, and buy your phone a life jacket !!

I'm having the same problem with my VX6100. I'm pretty sure I did not get mine wet but im in college too so its quite possible ive gotten it wet several times and dont remember. anyway, I went to verizon today to have them check it out and the guy put a new battery in but the same message came up so apparently its a software problem, not a battery problem. he told me to take it to one of the verizon stores that actually works on phones and they'll check it out and probably send me a new one

Did either of you eventually get this fixed? What was the solution?
I've switched batteries and it hasn't helped.
I dropped mine in water and had the "car kit" problem until I cleaned it out with rubbing alcohol and a tooth pick. Then when I reassembled it, I got the "Use genuine battery." error that won't go away no matter what.

there's a post on here about how to fix your LG when it's stuck on car kit (i also having dropped my phone in beer, as well as in a fountain, as well as answering it in the shower, as well as holding it out in the rain at a kansas concert; have serious issues with my phone not working, every time i drop it it does the use genuine battery thing)
same technique to fix it as when it's stuck on car kit
take anything metal and GENTLY rub it over the metal posts in the charging port.
do this while the phone is turned off and the batter is out
put the battery in, turn the phone back on.
problem should be solved.
