The connection seems tight (tighter than the recharge cable) on the phone end. The computer end does seem a little loose though...
Originally, I had it plugged into COM4.
| Quote: | | As far as a cable I think LG probably has one. But as with cell phone providers and all they'll run you around $30+ for the cable. |
They'd better not be selling cables for $30... that's how much I paid for mine with shipping included!
My cable doesn't have a molded plastic box in the middle of the cable. It's smooth the whole way.
I'll keep you updated as I fiddle with it. Thanks for your help!

Had a thought... If my phone is taking a charge from the USB cable should I assume that the connection is ok? Or should my phone even be taking a charge off the USB?

Was reading the text from the installation prompts and I noticed the name of the driver is something akin to "LGUSB Converter Driver" and I am asked if I want to install the LGUsbDriver.
No good... now I can't even install the driver! The setup program is reporting a "critical error".
I guess I'll go to the last restore point and start from there...

Turns out the only way I could get the drivers to install was if the phone was connected to the cable and my computer auto-detected the new hardware. The installation went seamlessly.
I installed BitPim (excuse the typo in earlier post! )
I've tried a myriad of different settings trying to get the program to detect my phone, but it can't seem to pick it up... In the connection selection screen, I have two choices: a serial connection (COM5) or a USB connection (COM4). Seeing as I'm connecting over a USB port I figure the USB is the correct choice. However, I tried both just to be sure. Neither worked.
The program stated that my phone was probably on the serial connection but I tried both anyway. I tried using "Other CDMA phone" "LG6000" "LG 6100" and a bunch of other phone possibilities, but whenever I tried to detect the phone it said it couldn't find any connected device.
Also, I asked this in one of my earlier posts, but my phone is sucking a charge from the USB cable. Is that normal for a data cable?

The Detect Phone option only works for fully supported phones. The only thing that works is the Filesystem tab. See if there is a +/ in there. If there is click on the +. You should get a listing of directories and files beneath it.
As for charging, yes it does that. The USB port provides power to whatever is connected to it. I kind of like it as I connect up my phone to my laptop while at work. That or if I work in the middle of the night on-call I can use it a lot longer.

You da man mrmonteith!
Got my first ringtone loaded on my phone last night. I made sure to save a backup copy of all the files before I added anything, but it seems to work fine! I loaded a clip from one of the choiral pieces from Lord of the Rings... it's perfect!
If anyone is interested in making their own ringtones, I recommend this program:
https://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html
It works like a charm to edit any .mp3, .wma, etc. I used it to cut the LOTR song down to size, and then set a lower bitrate. There's also a lot of other fun stuff you can do with it...
Thanks again for your help!
BTW, I pretty much followed everything in your instructions except for the part about not having the phone plugged in when installing the drivers. For some reason, my pc didn't want to install all the drivers if the phone wasn't in. However, as soon as I plugged it in, it started looking for specific drivers and automatically installed all that I needed. I used the "Other CDMA phone" option in the setup for BITpim. Everything else I did just as you explained.

Hey, you need to join my group. A guy working with BitPIM has a beta version going that supports the VX5200. It does the conversion of files for you and pretty much gui type work. He is still working on the phone book portion. But working great.

Just signed up for the Yahoo! group. There's some interesting stuff over there!
Got a question for yah...
I was able to load an .mp3 file last night by renaming the LOTR.mp3 file to LOTR.mid.mp3. I right-clicked on the "ringer" file in the file tree, clicked "new file" and added a the ringtone. Everything worked fine. Now I'm trying to do the same thing with a Gladiator sound byte but it's not working. Do I need to create separate sub-directories for each ringtone?
