For myself and others we have been trying to figure out how you can
get ringtones on your VX5200 phone besides using cellular phone
providers
expensive cable, services or some pay service.
Okay, I've got this to work for myself.
***** NOTE ****
But still doing the wrong thing can mess up your phone so you
need to study up yourself. So this is for informational
puposes so don't blame me if you do something to your phone.
I provide it for informational purposes only!
***************
If you do find something that needs correcting or maybe rewording let me know.
I bought my cable off of a seller on E-Bay that said it supported the VX5200
phone. The cable is labled:
for: LG VX6100/VX7000
My assumption there is that a comparable cable would work. I'm waiting
to hear from others that have tried alternative cables.
Noteo not plug in the cable and phone first. You need to load drivers first.
1. Installed the drivers that came on the CD for that cable. In my case
it was the Prolific drivers.
2. Installed the LG drivers so that it recognizes LG phones. BTW, which
are Qualcomm phones in most cases.
3. Connected up the cable to the phone. When you do with the phone
powered on the system detects the hardware and adds
it to the hardware list. On mine it happened to be COM5.
4. Fired up BitPIM and went into Edit - Settings. Selected
"Other CDMA Phone" as the phone choice.
5. Click on Browse to the right of Comm Port and selected the port
"LG CDMA USB Model Diagnostic......". Others may work but I stopped at this one working.
6. Take the checkmark off at the top for Read Only (for obvious reasons)
Note: This means you could write stuff to the phone. I recommend saving a
backup copy of your phones files. In BitPIM right-click on / and select save.
This will create a zip file of everything it sees on the phone. But still
wiping out the wrong file and you'll be calling support for your phone.
7. Go to the Filesystem tab and you should see a + to the left of /,
click on the + sign.
8. Click on the + to the left of user, then sound, then ringer. More
than likely nothing in there unless you have a ringtone from some place.
9. Right-click on ringer and select new file and find a midi file you
want to add and add it. If all works well it will show the status at
the bottom that it's loading it on the phone. Note:If you have an
.mp3 I was able to rename the file before uploading to .mid and that works.
Note: the first time you load a ringtone it makes a file in /dload
called ringtone.dat. If the phone doesn't show up the new ringtone
on the menu but BitPIM shows it's loaded on the phone, make a copy
of the ringtone.dat file to your pc (for backup just in case), remove
the ringtone.dat file and when you reboot the phone it will say
something like "needs service". It's because it detected that file
missing. It will recreated it.
10. Once it is loaded right-click on ringer and select Reboot Phone.
11. After that you should be able to go into the phone in My Ringtones
or find the new ringtone when you go to select a ringtone.
I've run into instances where some of them are loaded but make no sound
at all or very low. Best I've found is that .mp3 has to be saved at 64kb
bit rate to work.
If you find any alternatives to any items in here let me know.
Michael

The menu option is not on the phone as is the case with the VX3300, 6100 phones. Either they left that menu option out or what exactly I don't know.
I've heard suggestions of using SMS or MMS messages to try sending them to the phone. My thought would be to try using Verizon's service to send one to the phone and examine the format.
But with a cable and BitPIM we don't have to worry about either. We don't use minutes or money to buy ringtones or to put them on the phone.

I installed the drivers that came with my CD and when I plug in the phone it did nothing. So I force installed the prolific drivers but it is not able to use the device. I never got any sort of auto plug and play when I plug my phone into the cable. It just starts charging my phone and thats it. Any idea what I could be missing?

If you look at your OS set of hardware under Comm ports do you see one for an LG phone?
You are using a VX5200 phone right? Your profile said VX3300. Just checking.

This is because of verizons new phone setup. Instead of the normal phone menu and stuff, they have made a verizon user interface that they install on ALL NEW PHONES. LG7000 and anything made after that. This means eventually, all phones will be basically the same with different designs and brandnames. This has restricted many options that come with the phone because verizon now has the option to disable what they want. This controls stuff like the red bars on the top and bottom, and choice of wallpapers.

I have a 3300 but my cable says on it 6100 and 7000. the ebay auction said it works with 3300 though. I have been able to force install a driver in but it does not work
So it shows up on the list but with problems
After I change the values it asks me to restart then when I get back into windows the device has this error
It never auto picks up that the device is plugged in. It just charges the phone as if it was plugged into a wall plug.

I don't know which drivers you have really. Only for the fact mine doesn't say Prolific USB to Serial bridge. So I suspect it's different driver than what I have. The file I used was:
PL-2303 Driver Installer.exe
However I haven't dealt with the VX3300 enough to try it.
I have heard of people contacting the Ebay seller regarding the issue. Hey, it's worth a shot after you've tried everything. It's not doing what it's supposed to. So either they don't know for sure, or they do and you did something incorrrect. So you just have to elminate your end.

mrmonteith, I just purchased a USB cable from an ebay seller (software included). Mine also was labelled "for: LG VX6100/VX7000".
I botched the first attempt at installation, but I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled following your directions. However, I still can't figure out how to upload the ringtones. I figured that as soon as I installed the drivers my phone would show up as a USB device in "My Computer". I've tried fiddling with the connection settings on my phone... I made most of my attempts with the "USB" option selected. I tried using the "COM" selection just for the heckuvit but it didn't work. Any idea what's going on?
Also, what's MipBIT?
And finally, why doesn't LG make a USB cable with all the drivers and interfaces for their phone? Just curious...
Thanks in advance.

I've had a couple of instances of people having problems with USB ports not making good connections or connections on the phone end. Try with another USB port on the PC. What does it show listed in the com ports as the name? BitPIM is a free software that is used to read the file system. YOu can get it at www.bitpim.org. You need it or QPST to read the file system and to move files to/from the phone.
As far as a cable I think LG probably has one. But as with cell phone providers and all they'll run you around $30+ for the cable. It's a new phone and basically all I got from Verizon and LG is that you can't do it. Phoey, it's been done lots of times already.
If you still can't get it going look through the steps I have. If what you see is different I need to know what is different. The comm port number would be different but most of the rest the same.
The cable you got, does it have a plastic box molded in the middle of the cable or just USB connector on one end and the phone plug-in on the other. The one with the box in the middle typically requires the Prolific drivers.
