I've done my fair share of customer service.
See, I'm really a computer geek working security because there aren't many computer geek jobs out there that aren't also being persued by a thousand other out-of-work geeks with more experience and letters after their names.
I did a 1.5 year stint as a PC tech while in college, including phone support for our boxes, and that was pretty darn bad. I also, more recently, spent 7 months selling Gateways at a store in Grand Rapids, MI. Now, I don't know where you or anyone else here is from but I'm gonna make a blanket statement: western Michigan has some of the least technically minded people in the country. Explaining computers to them (and why the $200 e-machine or compaq at wal-mart really is a piece of crap) was.... frustrating. I made good money though, even if the computers themselves were only 1.5% commission (software was 10% and printers and cameras were 6%, i think).
Plus, I doubt your customers are drunk, 4 inches from your face and screaming how they 'aint got nothin to lose' while you try to herd them back to their apartment. Your customers are probably also not off their meds and following you around for 7 hours talking about how their dead mom speaks to them and their cousin Ricardo is God and then letting their cat outside and wondering why it runs away.
Your customers hopefully don't also do this at oh-dark-thirty and wake half of a 260 unit apartment building up.
So yeah, customer service sucks, security sucks, and I really need to find a good computer job that doesn't involve dealing with the public. I'd say doesn't involve dealing with people at all, but that's pushing it.
And now, I go to bed, to do it all over again tonight. Whee friday night, when the people come home from the bar at 0230 and find they've locked themselves out of their 3rd story apartment and attempt to climb a tree outside to see if they left a window open.

I'm pretty much on the exact same boat, I'm also a computer geek, but i've only got 1 year of university under my belt and nobody seems to think thats worth anything. I probably dropped off a good 50 resume's in this city (I'm up in Saskatchewan, Canada) and nobody seemed interested.
I've ran my own computer service company for a while, I've worked as a Data Management Technician, but because I dont have a degree in anything nobody wants me
Oh well, answering phones pays the bills just as well.

I agree with ya man, most of the people who call me are just needing to vent and dont actually need anything changed. I can understand why they need to vent, but why do they need to vent on ME?
