Hi all,
I hate reading message boards, in part because people start new threads when they just aren't necessary. Even though I'm having a different issue than the original post indicated, it is an issue related to the MP3 player built into the VX8100, so I'm going to keep on posting here.
In my last post, I indicated that I'd be returning to the Verizon store that sold me the phone to get some answers. Well, there were no answers to be found. The sales guy tried to find some info, but he admitted that Verizon didn't want to get into this area (phones with integrated MP3 players), but manufacturers pushed them into the market by including MP3 capabilities in their phones. He also indicated that neither LG nor Verizon has any useful documentation on the MP3 features of the VX8100. The technician on-site was also clueless about any known issues with the VX8100's MP3 player. LG support told me that the phone isn't designed to play MP3 files until January 2006, and then they'll have to be downloaded from Verizon's music-on-demand service ( ). Total BS, considering Verizon promotes the ability to load music from the mSD card, but whatever.
I really don't want to return the phone, so I'm creatively seeking solutions to fix the problem with the MP3 files. While reading through archives at Howard's Forums, I stumbled across a post that indicated problems playing MP3 files if the gain is too low. Can anyone confirm whether this is a known issue (possibly one with a fix)? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi again,
Well, I came home this evening and attempted to adjust the gain of one of the MP3 files that wouldn't play on my VX8100. Wouldn't you know it, I adjusted the gain to 200%, and the damn thing plays just fine.
So apparently, if the gain in a track isn't high enough, then the phone just assumes the file is corrupt and won't attempt to play it. However, I'll need to experiment a bit more to determine how high the gain has to be for the track to play.
You'd think this would be the kind of thing a company would document, so that when someone calls...oh, I don't know...technical support...then someone could use that information to (and I know I'm just being crazy here) resolve the issue. Nevermind, just let us, the avid consumer base, figure it out on our own. We've got nothing better to do.
- Greg
PS: I used SoundForge 7.0 to fix the gain, but there are several other shareware and commercial programs that should do the trick. If anyone knows of a good utility for batch processing tracks, please clue the rest of us about it. Thanks!

Is there any way that I can set one of my songs from the MP3 file to my ringtone?

viewso7635,
If the files aren't visible on the phone, then I'll bet the issue is the length of the filenames. In one of my previous posts, I indicated that filenames must be no longer than 43 characters (not including the .mp3 extension) in order for the phone to "see" them. It's ridiculous, I know, but that's the limit. Try shortening your filenames, and let me know if you're still having issues.

Greg:
I am having terrible difficulty with this. I have put my MiniSD in my computer(i have 3 random mp3's put on it from my computer) and every time i try to delete or rename anything this message pops up: Cannot remove(delete or rename): This disc is write protected. It then says i need to take the protection off. How do I do that?!
Thank you for your help!

Thanx to the people on this forum I've figured out how to activate mp3 player using the external buttons (You just have to hold the "Play" button down for 2 seconds) Another good thing to know is that the file length for the MP3s must not exceed 43 characters.
However, I cannot figure out what's the best way to transfer mp3s from the computer. I bought a USB cord, however I have to use Bitpim shareware to download mp3s from my PC. It takes forever to tranfer a song because it uses a serial port setting (I have no clue why!) Shouldn't it appear as a drive in "My Computer"?
Another question with VX8100 is the possibility to create folders on the miniSD card so the phone recognizes them? It's a madness to have 200 songs unorganized.
Please post your thoughts on this matter. Thanx a lot!

Hey guys- this looks like a relatively old topic, but let me throw my hat in the ring and see if what worked for me can also work for you as well...
First off, I can confirm that the song will not appear on the phone's mp3 player if the title is too long. This, of course, is an easy fix.
Next, the phone's mp3 player apparently won't recognize files that end in anything other than ".mp3" (this means NO .wma !!). Converters can be found all over the web to change over your .wma's into the user-friendly .mp3's. Unfortunately, every single song I've purchased online ended in .wma but every song I've transferred from my CD collection to computer has ended in .mp3. This inconsistency based on the source of the song file could explain why some transfer to your phone and some don't.
Finally, and this is the kicker, songs that are protected aren't convertable from .wma to .mp3. There is probably some hack site out there to get around this one but the fact that protection exists on every song I've gotten from Rhapsody and every song I've purchased for $.99 from MusicMatch is very frustrating since I can't (as of this moment) transfer them to my phone...
That's it, gang- the VX8100 is MP3 friendly as long as your files come from non-protected sources and as long as their titles end in .mp3. I love the sound quality from headphones by the way. Oh, one more thing- you can toggle the MP3 Player on/off with the phone closed (I think a previous poster touched on this) by holding the play button for about 2 seconds. Let me know if there's anything else giving you problems!

I just got the VX8100, and equip to take advantage of the MP3 player. I found it frusterating that it will not recognize file folder structure. I tried shortcuts with .mp3 extensions etc. nothing works. I have to place all my mp3 albums in the root directory. What does work to maintain order, in the absence of playlist capability, is a brute force approach of renaming the file names in the order you want each album to appear for instance: "01 firstalbum songtitle.mp3", "02 firstalbum songtitle.mp3", become:
"0101 firstalbum songtitle.mp3", "0102 firstalbum songtitle.mp3"
and another album added to the mix would be:
"0201 secondalbum songtitle.mp3", "0202 secondalbum songtitle.mp3" and so in the my_mp3 root would appear:
0101 firstalbum songtitle.mp3
0102 firstalbum songtitle.mp3
0201 secondalbum songtitle.mp3
0202 secondalbum songtitle.mp3
which will then play the songs in the order you want them to be played (e.g., by album then song number)
What still frusterates me is the head phone jack is not friendly to stereo-to-stereo adaptors. I've tried 2 from RadioShack one angled, and one straight in--they both will only work in stereo when not fully plugged in to the jack. I'm working on a "gasket" or "bumper" to see if such will keep the adaptor tip at the appropriate distance to get good stereo sound, and hold it in the jack snuggly. If I have success I'll report back.
On the whole I'm so pleased with the mp3 capabilities of this phone (using a 1gig SansDisk miniSD). I've even fallen in love with the sound out of the little speakers--it's amazing device.
Please post any thoughts or notes on my adaptor problem (other than purchasing the Verizon headphones), or the original .mp3 not being able to see subfolders issue.
Cheers,
wizphoz
