Question here...how do you get the MP3 player for the VX8100? I can't find it anywhere going through all the menus.
If it matters, here's my software versions:
SW Version: T81VZV01
PRL Version: PRL 50430
ERI Version: ERI4
Is there an upgrade from that - thta will give me the mp3 capabilities? The sales rep at the store said "oh, you're phone is updated already..it was only a problem for when they were first released" but I suspect they just shamed me w/an excuse. I just bought my phone 5 days ago.

MP3s are a hot/cold issue. The MP3 world is full of grey area with all sorts of legal issues regarding the right to privacy, freedom of information, consumer rights, piracy, copyright violations, etc. etc. Enabling the use of MP3s on ANY device wether it be cell phones, computers, or other mobile devices is an area of the market that many (and by many I mean MILLIONS) of companies are not willing to venture into.
Let's say you downloaded or purchased pirated music and put these onto your cell phone, you were caught and fined a large chunck of change. You (or obviously someone in this world) could then turn around and file a claim against the manufacture of your cell phone stating that their phone design and software allowed you to do this easily and prompted or encouraged you to download or purchase these illegal MP3s. It has happened before and costs the manufacture lots of money, headache, and bad publicity.
So instead they enable a very restricted use of MP3s on their products... such as a mobile MP3 store where you can go online, legally purchase MP3s, put them on your phone, and lead a happy care-free life.
Now yes this really sucks for the people who "own" the hard copies of music they wish to put onto their cell phones, but that's just what happens. Someone or some people ruined it for all of us.... sort of. Now we just turn to alternative solutions to get what we want.
Technically... even if you own the CD, you are in violation of copyright by converting it to MP3 (by law you cannot change the "format" of your purchase) but at the same time you, as a consumer, have the right to protect your purchase by making a backup copy which is still changing the "format" anyway. Do you see where I'm going with this?
It's a never ending cycle that will never be corrected.

Yes there is but you need to reprogram the my_ringtones.dat file... and if you're trying to tell the phone that your mp3 ringtones are on the mini sd card... you have to point it there instead of simply erasing the file and having your phone recreate it. The best way to do this is to search for a program called the VX8100 Ringtone Application.
Steve: You have the old version of the software... you need to go to a Verizon store and have your phone flashed to the new software (T81VZV04). And from the easily accessible menus, there is no MP3 player...
Press the right menu button and select "Get Tunes & Tones" and then you'll see an option for My MP3. Or you can close your phone and press and hold the play button to load up your MP3s (note: this will not work with the old software).
OR You can go the service menu by pressing MENU
then 0
and enter a code of 6 0's (000000)
Go to option #9 (Get It Now Settings)
then option #16 (Get It Now)
towards the middle of this list is "MediaPlayer" which may or may not show your files and is probably why it is not officially active on the phone.

Not sure where you heard that or why you were told version 4 won't let you play your MP3s... version 4 "enables" you to play your MP3s.
Here's a thread that will give you all the details:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=696113
Be sure you have BitPim and the MP3 Ringtone Application (which you can download from the first post in the thread I just gave you).
Also... I recomend having a card reader installed on your computer so you can transfer MP3s straight to your card without going through your phone to do it. The 8100's file transfer abilities are extremely slow! Just put all your MP3s in the MY_SOUNDS folder on your miniSD, run this through the MP3 Ringtone Application and overwrite the dload/my_ringtone.dat file on your phone and you're all set. You don't even need to reboot your phone.
NOTE: This is for MP3 "ringtones"... if you want seperate MP3s to play with the 8100's MP3 application, you'll have to place them in the my_mp3 directory on the miniSD card.
But to be quite honest with you... you can have full quality MP3s as your ringtones so why not just play your ringtones to listen to music... unless of course you really like the EQ display and the ability to FF/RW/Pause. I currently have 22 full length MP3s at 192k bitrate available as ringtones on my phone. I did not have to recompress or crop these MP3s at all... I simply copied them straight from my computer. I also have Star Wars Episode 3 on my phone (miniSD) ripped straight from my DVD. The quality is pretty damn good for a cell phone even though it's pretty much pointless to watch on a 2 inch screen! It makes for a good show piece though.

Thanks everyone for all your postings - I learned a lot from them all.
I just got my software upgraded on VX8100 to the version 4 so now I have my MP3. I put some mp3's on my MiniSD in the "my_mp3" folder and there you have it - they all play fine. I follwed the naming rule of 43 characters or less - no problem. Now I'll have more fun once I get my usb cable in the mail this week.
Now one other thing - I read somewhere, someone actually put a movie on their phone (not sure if it was mpg, avi or another other video format) but somehow, they got the movie the play. Why you'd wanna play a movie on your cell phone and 2" screen - who knows...I guess it's "because I can" thing. Anyone ever heard of doing this or have done it? I'd be curious to find out.

Read my previous post. I've done it with lots of movies. You just need to compress your movies in 3GP format with a program called "SUPER". At least that's what I use and it works perfectly. SUPER will even convert straight from VOB files.

1. MP3's must be 43 characters or less (no special characters either, ike a * or & or $). I'm still trying to figure out how to get an MP3 to be a ringtone.
2. Video clips are in 3g2 format. There are many converters out there that can convert mpg/avi to 3g2. I use ImTOO 3GP Converter (http://www.imtoo.com/3gp-video-converter.html (you can find hacked one's..like bittorren or some p2p file sharing). Another program I know of is Xilisoft 3GP Video Converter. I'm still experimenting with video size.
3. If you have a blank MiniSD - no files, no folders and just copy your mp3's there - they won't play. You need specific folders on the miniSD. The folders are:
MY_FLIX (video's)
MY_MP3 (mp3's)
MY_PIX (images)
my_sounds (midi files)
My phone created those folders for me. I took some pic's and saved them to disk. I took some stupid 15-second video and saved it to the disk. Some of the midi files on the phone, I moved them to the disk.
If you don't have a card-reader for you miniSD - I recommend you get one. I have a mult-card reader and it's nice to have that so I can transfer stuff from the PC to the card (use it for a multitude of things besides my cell phone card).
As for using software for sounds/mp3/music - whatever...oh my. so many programs. I use Ringtone Media Studio, VS8100 Ringtone Aplication and I usually use SoundForge to convert wma to mp3 if I want it on my phone that bad.
Now if I can get my cell phone to read text files and display them, that would be nice.......
Hope this helps someone out there reading this forum....

I just ordered the usb cable for my 8100, i have read if you drag and drop to the phone directly everything works fine. That way you avoid the couple files deep problem.I will follow up after I get the cable and see for myself. Cable was 8.00 shipped on ebay.
