Hi guys and gals. I am hearing that I can take my Cingular V551 and use it to connect to the internet with my laptop. Can somebody help me get going? I have the unlimited text/media package with unlimited kb's as for checking my email on the phone itself. Thanks.

with that package (anything that is medianet) you will only be able to access wap enabled sites... to go anywhere online you will need a data connect plan....the medianet plans are meant for phone access only thats why the billing is different for the data connect plans

any data connect plan... the media net plans are wap (phone only) access

so call customer care and have them change the data plan on your account... everything will fall into place...

just a pointer...

if you get a data card (free after rebate at cingular.com) your connect speed will be a lot faster and the data plans are the same...

your best option is a pricy one, but kb overages can get out of hand. Laptop Connect for 79.99 would be the best, because it is unlimited data.(only avail for PC cards) But then you would need to purchace a card such as the GC83 PC Card and get a WIFI package instead, if you have a strong WIFI network in your area. That way, you just plug in your card and go, instead of tethering with a data cable. Of course if you buy a Bluetooth USB adaptor, than the v551 will tether via Bluetooth, and then the data connect unlimited would suffice.

I tried this with my v551 - the best reason was that the data reception in my area sucks, but with the 551 in my car kit with external car antenna, I got great data reception. The PC cards have horrible reception unless you are in a big city somewhere and you can't hook them to an external antenna.

The problem - using the v551 as a modem via bluetooth means that if a call comes in you can't use your bluetooth headset - the 551 only knows how to do one "bluetooth" thing at a time aparently. You have to completely disconnect and then re-enable the headset each time.

I went back to the Sony PC card but am hating it due to the reception. Anyone ever see any third party or "homemade" way to attach an external car antenna to the Sony card's antenna port? I have a couple of extra car antennas with coax style cables - never could find any adapter with the little tiny plug to go in the card, however.
