(EDIT: I eventually got this to work; see next post.)

I have two Samsung x427m phones with Cingular branding. I like the firmware on the older phone better, because it supports ascending ring volume and, more importantly, keeps flashing the service light red when I miss a voicemail.

The older phone has firmware X47MUCDJ4 (2004/October/rev4) and the new phone has X47MUCDL3 (2004/December/rev3).

So I want to "backup" the firmware from the older phone and then flash it into the newer phone. (I do not want to disturb the IMEI of either phone.)

I have a serial cable that works with EasyGprs.

I installed OptiFlash version 4.12.

The platform.def file (dated 2004/04/29) does not offer x427m model -- just the x427, so I selected that.

When I click the "Backup" button, I get ERR_RANGE_OUTSIDE_FLASH errors (complete log follows below).

So...

Question 1: Is it my cable that is the problem? Looking at the log, it seems like my PC is happily talking to the phone, at least at the beginning.

Question 2: It it choosing x427 instead of x427m that is my problem? Does anyone have an updated platform.def file?

Question 3: Or am I making some other stupid mistake?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Here is the OptiFlash log:

FYI, I got this to work, as follows:

I used "OptiFlash 4.14 T".

Options|Settings|Generic: selected Hardware Platform "Customer T: X40x", 1 pass, Default, clear all checkboxes.

Options|Settings|COM Port: COM 1, 115200.

Options|Settings|Flash and Verify: Not important yet.

Options|Settings|Read: Specify a save file (perhaps foo.sre). Read Ranges 0x00000000-0x00001FFF and 0x00004000-0x00FFFFFF.

Back to main dialog. Switch serial cable to D/L. Plug in "source" phone with desired firmware. Click Read button, turn on phone when prompted, etc. Takes about 25 minutes to read and save file. File is apx. 49 megabytes.

Options|Settings|Flash and Verify: Select the foo.sre file just created.

Back to main dialog. Plug in "target" phone with undesirable firmware. Click Flash button, turn on phone when prompted, etc. Takes about 30 minutes to write file.

At the very end, I had a heart attack when log said

Error code: ERR_CMD_FAILED
Sorry, an error has occured ! (ERR_CMD_FAILED)

But I then proceeded to use the Verify feature, which only takes 1 minute (huh?). OptiFlash reported "All is well !".

The IMEI number on the target phone was not changed. No ill effects at all. *#1234# now reports same firmware version on both phones, which is what I wanted.

the ringer of the x427m is not loud enough for me ...question is: can I do some kind of hex edit of a file on the fone to obtain the ascending ringtone feature referenced above? can I download a ringtone that will have a higher volume (if volume is an inherent characteristic of a ringtone)? ...please help with this if you can. Also, where to get optiflex 4.14 download? TIA!!

The older phone has firmware X47MUCDJ4 (2004/October/rev4) and the new phone has X47MUCDL3 (2004/December/rev3).

Wrecks,

Would it be possible to get a copy of that "X47MUCDJ4" firmware. The voice mail indication would be great. Didn't see a email address available so figured I'd try the hard way?

Thanks.

2Nutz, I am reluctant to post my email address on this forum. If you post yours, I will email you the file. Otherwise we have a standoff icon_sad.gif

Or, if you can suggest an anonymous ftp site, that would work.

I set up a temp account so go ahead and send it

If you could let me know the name of the file or the time after you send it I can better verify who/where its from.

Much appreciate the help. Looking forward to improve the operation of the cell.

Hi there!

After reading this post, I just realized that I have the exact same situation going on right now, the only thing right now is I can't turn on my old phone anymore to get a copy of it's software. I know this is an old post but I am hoping it will reach either 2nutz or wrecks. I would love to have a copy of X47MUCDJ4 (2004/October/rev4). Please let me know if you still have your copies and I will post my temporary e-mail address. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the copy I got from wrecks is still on my old 'puter. Might take a day or two to get around to hooking it up. Let me know.

You are awesome! Thanks so much for responding, I was worried because the post was 2 years old. If it is not going to be trouble for you to pull it back up, I will more than gladly wait. After you received yours from Wrecks, how did it work out for you? Any problems? and did you like how it worked better than the software that came with your phone? Thanks again for taking the time to respond icon_biggrin.gif

Was surprized I got an email alert on this thread, must of subscribed way back when.
Updated a AT&T x426 to use w/ Cingular as a x427m. Went just as described by wrecks above, ie. showed an error at the end of the load but seemed to work just fine.

Give me a place to sent it.
