My contract recently ran out and I'm switching to Verizon (from Cingular). How would I go about switching my phone number from Cingular to Verizon? Do I buy a new plan and phone before cancelling my current plan? Anything else I should know? Thanks.

Dont cancel your current line with Cingular, call Verizon and tell them that you want to port your number over to them.

Should I call Verizon before ordering my phone, or should I order it and the plan and then call them?

wait until the day after you contract expires (if it hasnt already) call the service provider (or go into a store) you wanna go to and do it... do not cancel service with your current provider.. your number must be active to port... the gaining provider will take care of the cancellation for you

u don't need to talk to Cingular at all. Just call Verizon and give them the name on your Cingular account, billing adress,Cingular account number and password if there is one on the Cingular account, and Cingular u want to port over. wait 24hours. u will have dual service for 24 hours and abilty to dial 911(required by law).
