Hello everyone,
I have been using GSM cell phones overseas since 1995. i have always used an unlocked phone that i purchase from the authorized Nokia dealer. I have been using Cingular's service since August with a Nokia 6230i and 7610, which i purchased overseas. they are unlocked phones and have been working without a problem. all of a sudden, monday night i lost service, and Cingular is blamming the phone. i have proven that the phone is working. is there anything wrong with their service? is anyone experincing the same problems in upstate NY or surrownding reagions? the reason i am here is because they are giving me the run around!!
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Give me a zip code from your general vicinity and i'll let you know if our towers are having any troubles. Also, if you have the same problem all the time, everywhere you go (at least 10 miles), it is most likely a device problem...

I am in 12047 12205. The reason i know it isnt a devise problem is because while driving to and from work for example i do get reception, and it is actually maximum reception. when i was in the cingular store yesterday about 9 other people were experiencing the same problem.
In summary, i believe the phones i have work, as i get reception but since monday night i lost service in the majority of upstate ny.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Ok, so I checked out those zip codes, and the towers in the area look like they are functioning normally. There is only 1 major trouble ticket in NY state and it's for TDMA service (and it isnt customer impacting)..
That does not mean that there is no problems, it just means that we are unaware of any problems.
Considering you have 2 devices (and i'm assuming they have the exact same problem), and the fact that you do not have the same problem at all times in all locations. This is most definately not your phone malfunctioning. We will most likely have to file a trouble ticket.
Call customer care and advise them that:
1) On sunday you had good coverage, and at your home it dropped to nothing on monday (give them your zip code)
2) Tell them you have 2 devices and they are having the exact same problem.
3) Advise them that you do NOT have the same problem at all time in all locations. Give them a zip code or street address where your phone does work. (this indicates that it is a system problem, not a phone problem)
4) Ask the representative to call TSD to file a trouble ticket.
5) Be calm and courteous, it gets much much better results.

This is the first time i use an online forum, and I am finding it very useful. I would like to thank you for your time and effort in trying to help me out.
Prior to trying to find a solution here, I called Customer Service and notified them. I was told by the rep. that New England was experiencing a problem (VT, MA, CT, NH) were among the states that had problems, and said to be patient, which I am.
I know more than a half a dozen phones in the same area that have the same problem. My question is, will Cingular be able to provide service for phones that are unlocked and not purchased from them?
Again Thanks a lot, by any chance do you work for Cingular?

Yes, most definately, as long as the phone is unlocked and it supports the 850 / 1900 frequency range (that is what GSM phones use in the USA, or at least I think so).
Yeah, I'm a former AT&T, now a Cingular rep.

One thing I might wanna add: Officially Cingular does not support unlocked devices, we can get the voice service working, but beyond that we cant make any guarntees. Specifically we cant guarntee that data/messaging services will work properly.
But after reading this forum for a while, I'm pretty sure a little research would get those features working for you as well
