Sounds like a burnt out SIM card or your phone is from a different company than your SIM card.

naw mostly likely there was a problem with the activation. wat he needs to try is remove sim and battery from the phone and then put them both back in and hopefully that works. if not he needs to call Customer Service and them sent a OTA to the sim.
