Cingular is selling them brand-new for that price now. |
They have the V557 available for that price plus an additional $50 mail in rebate, but I didn't want to go the two year contract extension. Isn't that what the * means?

The V551 is a great basic phone and does its job well. I had it for six months, and it was a great phone. I would've had the phone longer but I got my dream phone, the Motorola V3 (Black Razr), for Christmas. The V557 is pretty much the same as the V551 just with the ticker tape on the screen, but if it's based off the V551 it should be a good quality phone.

That is the amount they were near last week. In a Cingular Wireless store in West Des Moines, Iowa they were marked as 219 or around that figure. The V557 is marked at 250 retail without a contract.

IMHO - I hear complaints about reception all the time on LG's, Moto's, Seimens, etc., etc., but hardly ever from Nokia (Cingular 6102 is to new to say) maybe the candy bar design has something to do with it...

The current RAZR model is a 551 with a nifty faceplate. Period. Compare the stats. But hey, if ya have the extra cash, I'm sure Motorola and Cingular would be oh so glad to take it off your hands. Some people are really really into form over function, which is great. But if you look at what you're paying for, makes ya feel kinda stupid for drooling over the RAZR.
I wanted a RAZR for a year, and when I finally got to go down to my local Cingular store to get my RAZR I had an epiphany. Upon comparing the specs I realized it was the exact same thing as my old trusty 551. Then I did the unexpected. I suddenly realized there were OTHER phones out there. I know what you're thinking... If I'm gonna impress people I'll need to whip out my RAZR. No one notices how cool I am when I whip out my Nokia or any other phone than the RAZR.
I swallowed my pride. And actually started looking for a phone based on...now stay with me.....performance. Once I realized that those super hip people with those snazzy RAZRs were just born to be much much cooler than I could ever hope to be. Free from the constraints of hipness, I was able to look at...here's my point...features.
Picked up the ROKR...6+ hours of music on a phone. I could be unhip while I listen to my music. This was right up my alley, as I love my music. If you're a shutterbug(photographer) there are phones out there with close to 2 megapixel cameras on them. There are phones with windows based interface for you surfers. There are walkie talkie type phones.
The point is...check features....features...phones do more than dial. really it's true.
I laugh every time I pass a lemming with a yawn cell phone that looks super duper cool. I'm converted. No longer a lemming. Viva la revolucion !!!

Yep I got mine for $119. Not bad at all when ya realize an ipod shuffle is a hundred bucks and cannot take photos or make phone calls nor does it have built in speakers which sound pretty damn good.
There's a deal somehere in this forum that new Cingular customers can get a ROKR plus free shipping plus a bluetooth earpiece all free. I have a few friends who took advantage of this special and are plain stoked. Tmobile converts. Welcome to the world of roll over minutes. It's nice to own your time.

you gotta read the fine print with those offers. ipod shuffles kinda suck. I'd rather beable to control my music.
did you hear that storey about the kid in hawaii who's mom put the ipod on laway, then when he opened it up christmas morning, inside was a steak.
it could only happen at wal-mart...
