Excuse my stupidity... but after successfully trying different firmware revisions (using MultiFlashFlex), I got too dangerous for a newbie:
I tried flashing a C390 firmware (which was supposedly compatible with the V180) from the MotoModders site: R368_G_0B.A0.0FR_PDS001_LP002E_DRM0001_JPJAVA_G_0B_C390_01_00_01I_SE89 43AXXU101E_1FF.shx
Now, the phone turns on and a get the startup tones but the screen is "blank". (Perhaps the screen dimensions don't match?) I tried flashing back to R364_G_0B.D1.1FR_LP0003_DRM0001_JPJAVA_G_0B_V180_01_05_58R_GSIV180DOBS ONNA115_1FF.shx
(amongst other versions). But even though MultiFlashFlex and FlashBackup both say that the flash was successful, there are messages in the error log:
Line: 2058
ERROR: File version v 0xBD2 for Code Group 1 is newer than Subscriber Unit version v 0xBA0.
File: Y:\test_dev_usb\flash\code\flashdll\PST_FP_FlashThread.cpp
Line: 2058
ERROR: File version v 0xBD2 for Code Group 3 is newer than Subscriber Unit version v 0xBA0.
File: Y:\test_dev_usb\flash\code\flashdll\PST_FP_FlashThread.cpp
Line: 2058
ERROR: File version v 0xBD2 for Code Group 4 is newer than Subscriber Unit version v 0xBA0.
File: Y:\test_dev_usb\flash\code\flashdll\PST_FP_FlashThread.cpp
and the phone only comes up in Boot Loader mode showing the ORIGINAL C390 R368 image:
Boot Loader
07.B0
SW Version:
R368_G_0B.A0.0
FR
Is it possible to resurrect this phone: Either some seem editing to fix the screen display or changing the boot loader. (I've tried a megapack with a higher boot loader.)
Thx.

Try removing the battery and the charger then a restart. Do you have a backup of your phone?

Yes, tried removing battery etc. and no, I don't have a backup of the entire phone. I only have the megapacks.
After researching a bit more on HowardForums, perhaps the boot loader has changed (to a C390) and a megapack flash won't rewrite the BL. But there MAY be a piece of software which can clone the boot loader from another V180...but I'm still researching.

Whew.... Found this thread at MotoModders
http://82.165.243.99/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=14328.
and basically, it said to use the free demo version of Moto Repair Studio from http://www.motlab.com. Select the phone model and click repair.
Repair Studio loaded(?) new firmware to my V180 which allowed me to then reflash a desired image. I can't believe it. It's black magic!
Seems like this might fix other "stuck in bootloader" problems?

Yes it's should work but one wrong move you be in deeper than you are right now so read all of it before you start doing it , don't doing it as you'r reading it. you will need to fine d boot loader thought

Yes, thanks for the advice....
I don't know what Repair Studio actually did. I only clicked on repair. After that, the only visible change was a different SW version in the bootloader screen. (The boot loader version remained the same.)
Then I re-flashed with my original megapack and the phone was resurrected. Whew... Thx again.

It rebuilds the PDS portion of the flash and loads a generic BL so you can then flash a monster pack. Like Old_Fool said, it can be very dangerous in the wrong hands.
Congrats on the recovery though!!! Great job.
