I have bought an at&t phone from Ebay. i have a cingular sim card and want it to work in the AT&T phone how do i do that?

Unlocking or flashing is a serious matter, mistake will lead to phone not working and need to return to manufacturer for repair. Hence, you need to be very sure on what you are doing. Recommend you read more posts from this forum before you proceed with it.

OK I will. when I type in #9999# it says emergency calls only. does that mean I have the wrng version?

Also i only have one sim card not two. Is there any other way or am I reading this thing wrong?

Try *#4357# which should display the help screen. Usually it will display some codes including one for S/W version.
You can also try *#9998*9999# and see if it can display the S/W version.
If nothing works, it could be a problem with the firmware as you never know what the previous owner had done to the phone.
