Hello Everyone. n00bie here with a n00bie question on cell phones. I am up for an phone upgrade (I am with Rogers in Toronto). I have been looking for cell phones and i notice that a lot of people buy phones without buying a 1, 2 or 3 yr deal, which means you would pay full pop, like 300-400 for a new phone. Why do people do that, how do they end up saving money in the end, i dont get it. They would have to go on a rogers, bell or whoever plan anyways, so why not sign a contract and get the phone at a discount?
Thanks,

it boils down to how much does that person want a contract... personally I'm with Aliant (a Bell subsidiary)... originally 1 yr contract... upgraded phone and got the phone free on a 2 yr... added the missus and now on a 3yr family plan (so she could get a free phone)... I have the phones insured so I dont have to worry about replacement cost if it is lost or stolen
the price is inversly propotional to your contract length

right, but some people buy a phone without signing a contract, therefor paying the full amount of the phone, which is very expensive. Thats what i dont understand. They have to sign with a carrier anywyas, why not just sign for 2 yrs and get a pretty big discount on the phone?

actually, people who don't buy a cell phone through their providers often want a phone that the major carriers don't carry. Take the moto v635 for example. It's an awesome phone, but no one carries it. Someone might decide that that phone suits them best, and just stick their existing SIM card into it when he/she wants to use it.
Yes, it is more expensive, but sometimes it's worth it.
