My friend had his palmOne treo 650 stolen he told us that they locked the phone so if anyone put their SIM card in it, that it would redflag the phone, is that even possible? i've looked it up online and all they say is that if they try and use HIS SIM card that it wouldn't let them. I am quite confused and can't figure if that could actually happen!

Thank you in advance! icon_ermm.gif

What department did you get the term "RedFlag"?

A:Lockline Insur.
Yes Lockline can lock the IMEI, but if IMEI number is being change there is no way of tracking or locking.

B:Cingular Wireless Customer Care
Sorry to inform you that they have no way of red flag a device nor locking IMEI, they just said that so they can hang you up. Reason I said that, is because once they stop your SIM Card they have no way of tracking the usage.

Best way to get back a lost phone (next time), enter "$XXX for returning the device, no question will be ask. Call ###-###-####" on you opening screen.

ugh, im asking a lot of questions, so now my friend thinks he is completely screwed since cingular can't trace the phone, just the SIM card, so since someone out there has his phone, they can just use it? even if he reports the IMEI number? that just seems wrong, ya know??

the device (the phone) is really immaterial... its the simcard that is the security feature...we trash the sim and send another ...

he's not screwed as long as he reports the phone lost or stolen

he's screwed out of a phone, but if he reported it to cingular as stolen, he won't be screwed by his bill.

but can you not go through the manufacturer, he has a palmOne treo 650, so can they not block the IMEI number or something so whoever took it can't use it?

not in North America...

when the SIM is blocked that service account (phone number) is blocked... another sim card is associated with that phone number ...

as posted earlier on this subject AFAIK the UK providers maintain a lost / stolen database for IMEI's
