Is it true that if you insert a Cingular SIM card into some random phone, it won't work? What I'm trying to say is, does your phone have to be bought at an authorized Cingular retailer for it to work? If this is true, why do so many people buy phones on eBay?

GSM phones come from the manufauturer locked to a provider (like cingular or tmobile etc)... you can have them unlocked so they will accept ANY sim

I've being hearing that line of BS a lot lately ... did you hear it from a cingular rep? Seems they've been spiting out that line pretty frequently. At any rate, that is not true. You can use your sim in ANY unlocked phone or cingular branded phone.

unlocked phone = any sim (as long as it operates on the proper frequency)
locked phone = only that provider's sim

Thanks a bunch, guys! But I don't know what it means when the phone is "unlocked" versus "locked". Could someone explain that to me?

i wouldnt exactly say it will work "properly" you will be able to make and recieve calls but as far as data goes youll have to get the settings and becuase its not going to be a cingular branded phone cingular wont have the setting for said phone because we dont support/sale said phone

unlocked - able to use with more carriers than the carrier specified
*depending on frequency
lock - locked only to the specified carrier
take sprint for example: always locked to the sprint network, no access to SIM.

locked phone...
you have a cingular sim and a tmobile phone
you insert a sim and what will show on the display is "enter subsidy code"
unlocked phone
you have a cingular sim and a tmobile phone
you insert a sim and what will show on the display CINGULAR
the phone accepts the sim and you can make and recieve calls... data setting may have to be input manually
