I have a current account with Cingular. Instead of doing an "upgrade" and paying for the phone that I want, I would like to cancel the contract (with the store that has been awful in helping me or answering my questions) and buy online...also getting the new phone I want for free. Can I port my Cingular number to a new Cingular phone?
I talked to a someone who has a store in another state and they said that they didn't think so....but someone recently did it with their Verizon phone...I swas told that when Cingular would be contacted about giving my number to a new Cingular customer, it would be denied because they would already have a Cingular customer on file with that number.
Is there any trick to getting this done? I have read all the porting info but they don't talk about keeping your number within the same provider....note keeping my number is not worth the price of the phone so I will lose the number to get a better phone.

you can't port from within a carrier. Porting is from one carrier to another. your options would be to either port to another carrier in order to keep your number, or cancel your contract and then sign a new one with a different number. but beware of the latter, I believe there is a waiting period between cancelling and resigning as a new customer.

if you cancel your account first, then the # is open to be given away. after you start up the new service, you can do a vanity # change to your old #. it's not guranteed taht you'll get it and it's a bit of a hassle.

also the number will be "held" for 90 days before it is recycled into the system for reissue , also beware when ordering from a 3rd party vendor, read the fime print, NOTHING is free you have to pay for the phone keep your plan and make ALL payments on time before you qualify for the rebates that make the phone "free" which after teh 6 months can take another 2-4 months to get so if you want to go thru all that trouble abd wait a year to get a phone that is supost to be free knock youself out

There is no such a thing as a cingular to cingular port. Move the number you want to the new account you build.
