What does it mean when a phone is "locked" or "unlocked"? All I can gather is that unlocked phones work with any SIM card and locked phones have to be bought with a specific service provider.

An unlocked fone is really useful if one carrier releases a fone that you want but you're on another carrier. Just buy it and have it unlocked and simply throw your SIM in there and you're set. It's also handy in case one of your friend's cell phones dies out and wants to make calls from your phone when they have another carrier.

the only glitch with using an unlocked phone is the that you may haver problems using the data side of the device... sometimes you can manually set them up... sometimes not

What do you mean like data? Just like the phone numbers or other things, such as programs...time...date...etc?

the setting for internet, mms, sms won't be configured properly.
like elmo said...sometimes you can configure them, sometimes you can't. it usually causes a problem if the phone was never released in north america

To provide a 'real world' example of being ABLE to get the settings configured...I'm a Cingular orange customer in the U.S.
I bought an unlocked SonyEricsson K750i - a phone NOT available in the U.S (available in the UK, Europe, South America and China) but has an awesome camera and phone functionality.
I was able to get the MMS, WAP settings etc by going to SE's UK web site.
SE has a section where you can select your phone, your carrier, the country you live in,etc and the server will send the correct settings to your phone.
Each cell phone manufacturer is different, as is each provider. SE rawks my sawks servicewise because they offer this capability on their web site.
Cingular, on the other hand, wouldn't send me or even tell me over the phonethe settings because, quote, "the phone is not available on the U.S. market." end quote.
