It is true T-Mobile uses 1900, but they have roaming agreements so 850 is usable with T-Mobile.
Have you tried locking in on T-Mobile? Most phones allow manual preference as to the service provider, but in Auto it will choose the strongest signal.
Also from my years of experience some phones are just better than others..period.
Nokia, Sony-Ericsson are the best T-Mobile phones!

As far as national footprint goes, now that T-Mobile is using the 850 via roaming agreements, they have the largest coverage area and still have the best cutomer service.
100% USA Customer Service Call Centers, 100% T-Mobile company owned Call Centers.
Not lease or "off shore" like the other.

The issue is that I am ALWAYS roaming, even in what I would assume to be T-Mo regions (San Fran Bay Area). The S300 is a tri-band phone, accessing the 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz bands. It does not access the 850MHz band, so any roaming that it is doing is definitely on the 1900MHz band (which is what Cingular is using).
I have tried a manual connect, but it does not find a T-Mo net to lock on to. I can lock on to Cingular if I want (the phone is currently set to search and use the best available network). Believe me, I've tried every possible permutation that I can think of.
Regarding phone quality, there are few better than the Samsung S30x series, at least that I've found. I've never had an issue with it (other than this one), and it's been all over the world. It's built solid, and works fantastic. It may not work well with T-Mo's network, but that's not due to phone quality. It even works fine with T-Mobile (I have no problems making/receiving calls or text messages), it's just constantly roaming rather than connecting to a T-Mo network.
I've about given up though. They told me when I signed up that it would work fine (although they couldn't guarantee any of the "bells and whistles" features like T-Zones...I cried a river over that...NOT), so I expect them to live up to their promise. If nothing changes from what I have right now, I'll be happy. If, however, as someone pointed out here, I am no longer able to connect using the S300 due to a lapse in one of their roaming agreements, I will have to point out that they are in breach of the agreement that they made with me, and I will have to find another provider. That would suck, because so far everything else about the company has been supreemo!

I do believe that Tmob uses a third party vendor for at least some of its tech support and customer care

I got a bit of info from some of the high-end tech support. Apparently T-Mobile has purchased some portions of the Cingular network (about 4 months ago) including the infrastructure in the San Fran Bay Area, no doubt due to the fact the Cingular is now using the old AT&T network. The towers are still identifying themselves as Cingular towers, and since my phone was NOT provided by T-Mobile, it is relying on the towers to ID themselves.
He told me that once T-Mobile gets all of the towers reconfigured, it should show up as T-Mobile even on unsupported phones.

T-mobil won't work at my home. Make sure it does work where you are before you buy...someone that has one, try it out where you want to use it because trying to drop them once started is a nightmare...my personal nightmare. They probably have a chart showing their coverage areas and the signal strengths, at least check that out first...

Just want to clear up some things here. Tmobile is on 1900 but roams on 850. To access all of their coverage you need a phone on 850 and 1900. You can see their coverage up close to the street level with their online coverage map, so you know exactly where you are covered. You can only roam on another company if tmobile has a roaming agreement in place. You have a 30 day trial period at the beginning of your contract, so you can test the coverage, and take back the phone if you don't get reception where you need it.
