I used to have At&t (now cingular). when att merged and stuff, all their computer stuff got messed up. Their customer service was also horrible! The coverage around my house was not that good, and it never got a 100% signal. I know T-mo customers who have a great signal. Actually I have to say that Verizon's the best though (except for their motorolas).

I've had no trouble so far with T-Mobile's network, or at least their roaming partners. Of course that may change if they lose roaming contracts.
My issue has been with T-Mobile customer service. All was good as long as they were providing me information that would assist me in stepping into another T-Mobile marketing channel (logging on to their website), but the minute that I asked for something that didn't allow them another way to get their hooks into my wallet, they shut down.
See http://forums.mobiledia.com/viewtopic.php?p=166150#166150 for the full story. I probably will be checking out Verizon when my contract expires. I may not leave T-Mobile, but I've seen this pattern of customer service before, and it generally leads to a bad situation. It all depends on what Verizon has to offer when my contract expires in December...

cdma Is A Much Better Technology Than Gsm And Can Handle More Calls Per Tower Than Gsm, And Also Penetrates Buildings Better Than Gsm. I'm An American And Proud Of It. Not My Fault Europe And Asia Are Primitive. Oh Yeah. Sprint Carries A Gsm And Cdma Hybrid Phone Just For Those Trips And It's Free To Borrow. Or You Can Just Buy It. But I Ain't Going Overseas Any Time Soon , So I'll Just Stick With The Superior Cdma Technology. Oh And As For Roaming Charges? No Such Thing Any More. Don't Even Get Overage Charges! No we do not and 3rd party vendors but, we do have tmo authorized dealers who are not tmo owned but do offer our service i can say that they can make their own prices on phns but cannot change the prices of the rate plans

Fyi My Logic Is Based On Pure Fact. That Is The Very Essence Of Logic And You Can't Get Much More Logical Than That. To Think So Would Be, Well, Illogical. So Go Ahead And Explain Your "logic " And Let's See If It Holds Any Water.

I'm using T-Mobile here in the wilds of northern New Jersey and I love it. The wife has Verizon, and while her signal strength is maybe 5 - 10% better than mine, it's not enought to make a difference. What really makes the difference in favor of TMO is their excellent customer service. Couple that with the fact that I never get a call dropped out here or in New York City (work) and it's a winner.
My primary phone is the Treo 650 so having an unlocked GSM phone is huge considering how much I travel overseas.

Directly to your point, I am using a Samsung SGH-S300 that for some reason cannot see the T-Mobile network (I've posted here asking if anyone knows why), but I can still use the Cingular and AT&T (and presumably other) networks just fine. The Motorola phone that T-Mobile sent me seems to get fine reception as well on the T-Mobile networks that I've tried it with (the Motorola can see Cingular's network just fine).
Bottom line is, I doubt you'd see much difference, since T-Mobile can use Cingular's networks as well, and if you have a Nationwide plan there will be no roaming charges. My personal recommendation though sides with T-Mobile, though not for the reason that you're asking about here. |
Damobius,
It could be the frequency at which T-Mobile is transmitting in the area and perhaps the phone is not able to recognize that frequency. You could check the specs of the phone to see which ones the phone operates on. Cingular uses both US frequencies of 850 & 1900 Mhz but not necessarily both in the same market. I'm not sure if T-mobile has the license for both 850 & 1900 Mhz frequencies.
As for T-mobile's use of the Cingular network, yes and no. I have a friend of mine with T-mobile, but his phone was inoperable in my hometown where my phone has perfect signal. T-mobile's coverage is based on the roaming agreements with Cingular. That's why their coverage is not as broad as Cingular's coverage.
