Newby here with a few months left on my old phone plan. Looking to upgrade to T-mobile or Cingular. I know cingular is supposed to have a really large national network but how is t-mobiles? I have seen a couple of the new phones t-mobile is coming out with and like them a lot more than cingulars phones. I was gonna go with cingular because of the coverage but if t-mobile is comparable I'd get the phone I like. Can anyone give me an answer to this?
Thanks

Tmobile is OK if you are outside alot...they transmit 1900 mhz signal which doesnt always penetrate buildings very well...other than that... when shopping for a service first determine what your needs are for voice and data (daytime ,off peak, long distance and roaming) and compare

I just left Cingular after 5 years, and have vowed to never return, due to customer service issues. I just signed up with T-Mobile, and so far am VERY pleased with them.
Directly to your point, I am using a Samsung SGH-S300 that for some reason cannot see the T-Mobile network (I've posted here asking if anyone knows why), but I can still use the Cingular and AT&T (and presumably other) networks just fine. The Motorola phone that T-Mobile sent me seems to get fine reception as well on the T-Mobile networks that I've tried it with (the Motorola can see Cingular's network just fine).
Bottom line is, I doubt you'd see much difference, since T-Mobile can use Cingular's networks as well, and if you have a Nationwide plan there will be no roaming charges. My personal recommendation though sides with T-Mobile, though not for the reason that you're asking about here.

the reason you can get cingular and not t-mo is because t-mo operates on the 1900mhz frequency, while cingular operates on 850/1900. t-mo and cingular have roaming agreements to provide increased coverage, so you can use eachother without roaming charges.
it's a rumour that cingular will drop t-mobile's roaming agreements when network integration is complete, leaving t-mobile customers with reduced coverage.

Hmm...the S300 is a triband phone, offering 900/1800, and 1900 as options (but not 850). It's set on 1900 since 900/1800 isn't used in the US as far as I know.
The MoTo V188 that T-Mo sent me is a quad band. Is it possible that T-Mo is using 850 in the SF Bay Area, so is invisible to the S300?

if i have this straight...the mot phone recognizes t-mo in the same area that the samsung does not?
right, 900/1800 isn't used in north america. t-mo only operates on 1900 though, so the samsung would be picking up the cingular towers at 1900 and the moto would pick up the 850 from cingular.
i'm not sure if this coincides with what you were saying/asking, but i'm not sure if i fully understand your question.

Tmobile is 1900 only...they have no use of the 850mhz spectrum

You're correct. The T-Mo MoTo V188 recognizes the t-mo network, but the Samsung does not even in exactly the same spot.

Actually, from what I understand (and the next poster confirms) both T-Mo and Cingular use the 1900 band, so either phone should be able to pick up either tower. The MoTo (T-Mo phone) picks up Cingular and T-Mo, but the Samsung (S300) does NOT pick up T-Mo...only Cingular (both pick up AT&T as well).

You've got the question right...now all I need is a way to make the Samsung pick up T-Mobile

i see...the only thing i can think of is that the moto has better reception and is able to pick up the t-mo tower. if the samsung has worse reception and cingular is stronger in that area, it would only beable to pick up the cing tower...a guess...sorry, but taht's all i can offer.

i have cingular (UGHH) they are THE worst. Once i had 5 bars and my call was cutting in and out. Tmobile used to SUCK! but as of sept. 2005 they have made extreme service upgrades which now makes tmobile AWESOME! they are also cheap in prices!! Cingular is TERRIBLE with costomer service ... tmobile is ranked #1 and i can strongly beleive that.
so basically
CINGULAR
