For my 6256i :
I am told that this phone cannot/will not play MP3 songs for ringtones. So what is the next best kind of music I can play as a ringtone? Is it called Polyphonic? If so, where might I get some, other than the Verizon website?

But.... people have told me that the 6256i does not play MP3 music as ringtones. Where can I listen to a sampling of 24-chord polyphonic music? -Kismet

Nokia website:

There might be a chance, that Verizon has blacked this features so they can sell their expensive ringtones to their customers (some providers unfortunatly do that)
Just try a mp3-track on your phone. Be sure it is a "normal" mp3, nothing fancy with various bitrates or so...
For the 24-chords: the number only indicates how many instruments the phone can play at once... it's hard to find a track which exceeds this or even gets close. Quite every midi-file should work.

Yes, it is true that Verizon disallows MP3 so that we are forced to buy their ringtones. However, Verizon did NOT disable the OBEX feature in the 6256i BlueTooth, so I am able to do file transfers via BlueTooth (it is amazingly easy and fast). Were it not for this, I would not have joined VzW.
But back to the point: Do you know of where I can find some polyphonic ringtones (other than Verizon)? -Kismet

Have you checked, if .amr-files are blocked?
They are real tones too (you can use the Multimedia Player of PC Suite to convert mp3s to amr).
Sounds much more better.
You can try every midi-file you can find, pointing you directly to some would mostly be a violation of copyrights.

I don't know whether or not .amr-files are blocked. What does that stand for? Since I use an iMac, I can neither download nor use the Nokia PC Suite, but I get along fine without it...... except, of course, for whatever extra things it may do for me with music. -Kismet

Hmmm... tricky little Mac user...
I had took a look around, but haven't found any software for Mac to convert to amr.

Perhaps I am destined to be satisfied with what came in my phone. VzW has pretty much no ringtones for the 6256i. -Kismet
