ashbabash, all you have to do is rename the mp3 file extension from .mp3 to .3gp in the folder the file is in, and then follow the other steps and you'll be good to go!
BTW, I just want to thank all you guys for the help! This forum has been heaven sent from above...the light at the end of a dark tunnel!! lol I was so depressed by this ringtone issue I wanted to give the phone back to the person that bought it for me! I now love my phone and can appreciate it more! THANKS TO YALL!!!!!!

anyone figured out if you can change the lame text message tones that come on the phone to one of your mp3s? The tones you are forced to use which come with the phone totally suck.

Hey guys I had my phone since September and I was wondering about the ringtone situation as well. But someone that i know that works for TMobile told me about the hitting back and how it saves the rintones, and it works fine 4 me...but i hav been reading your guys topics about how to do this, and i tried them jus for fun, and the .3gp format does not work @ all! I was going to try the amr way, but i couldnt find a free program to download...but the way my friend told me is so easy. Which brings me to the other question I want 2 set a ringtone for my girlfriend, but cant figure out a way to do that....Can someone please help...I can only set an mp3 as the phones ringer, not an individual...PLEASE HELP ME

Guys, I am so happy I found you. for months I have been using the t809. As you could tell, I was unhappy , since I could not use my personal MP3 songs as ring tones. But then I cam to this site. I thank the dude that went through the trouble of converting the mp3 songs to 3gp. I could only imagine what he went through to arrive to the desire conclusion. Thanks dude. .
I think there is a confusion on the t809 modes. Remember that there are 2 modes for the t809: one is the actual phone and the second is the card which is in the phone. Once you "save file as" the 3gp extension. the person needs to place it inside of the micro sd card not the "phone memory". Once it is placed inside the "micro sd card" try to set it as a ring tone. The phone will let you know that it will transfer it to the phone and make it the default ring tone to the phone. Basically, just fallow the instruction on page #3.

So ive tried everything and well i get the error " Content not supported" Not even that, I cant even connect to the PC with it. I tried it both under modem and mass storage, and nothing.
This forum helped a lot though. At first The MP3 was grayed out. the 3gp Made it selectable! but it says "content not supported" when i try to save it. This doesnt work nither as a alarm ring tone.
Any ideas of what i can do? thanks a billion

When you have the phone in usb mode. Take any song you want in mp3 format and play it in windows media player. You do not have to play the song completely. But go to file and save as. And save the song in 3gp extension. Once you do that put it into your music folder inside your card. The song will not work there, you will have to selected and then click on the option button select to copy or to move it to the phone memory and it will do that. Once this is done it should work.
Please, let me know if you made it work for you.

hey man thanks for the respond, I followed your Directions to the key! but in the end when i select it and I want to Save(to finalize the change) i get a error which says "not supported content" and thats my only error from it, and the only thing that is keeping me from enjoying my phone to the fullest of its capabilities! I can listen to the song on the music player but it wont let me confirm its selection in the end.
Any ideas?
thanks

My tip for a memory card is simply get the biggest your phone can handle
