Ok, i have read through this thread many many times and i STILL cant seem to get this to work. Im trying to use the .3gp method right now.
Ive tried converting the file over to .3gp by using windows media player and by just changing the extension. When i put it on the memory card, it doesnt show up in the ringtones area and i cannot move it. If i put it in the other folder on the phone, it shows up as a red X and the only option i get is to delete it.
When the file was in the "My Sounds" folder of my memory card, it would work correctly, but the only options were to play or to delete.
Please someone, tell me if im doing anything wrong.
I just bought the phone yesterday, so is it possible that samsung updated the phone to prevent these work arounds?
EDIT: nevermind, i figured it out I was going thru the file manager in settings instead of the file manager in the fun and apps menu.

I cliped a mp3 and renamed it as I saved it to the "music" folder. My phone was allready set to play the "remedy.mp3" that came with the phone. So I oversaved the remedy.mp3 with the ringtone I created and didn't have to adjust any settings on the phone, it just picked it right up.
Thanks to all of you for the usefull info you shared on this phone!

I have been trying to get mp3 ringtones to work on my phone and i finally got it to work yesterday!
I gave it up for months and i tried it again yesterday and at first i tried the method of just selecting the "grayed" out mp3 and then just saving it and after trying it the first time it worked flawlessly! then i took my mp3s off my phone and put them on my computer and all i did was put the songs directly on my desktop and changed the name of the file from mp3 to .3gp and put them on my phone again by dragging and placing it on my phone's "other files" folder. The sound quality is the exactly the same as the original mp3s and now i can assign my songs to different people.
My patience paid off. I thought that i was the only one that couldn't get these methods to work but they did! and I'm so excited and loveee my phone and all of its qualities!

ive tried the converting file names method to the selecting the grey method and neither are working for me
when i convert the files to 3gp and i go to transfer it VIA the samsung phone explorer that was provided with my phone it will tell me the operation unknown or unknown file type
1- is there another way to transfer the files to the phone?
2- which folder do you transfer the file to?

this actually works. with a few modifications:
stick with me this is how i did it and it worked.
keep your phone at mass storage. send the 3gp to your other files folder on the memory card. then go into your phones file manager and go to your memory card's other files folder and go into it and choose to send it to your phone...then go into your phonebook and go to change someones ringtone and it should be in your music folder and it should be selectable
