Hey, everybody. I just got a T809 the other day and have been playing around with it. I noticed that its ringtones were in mp3 format and I knew the phone had bluetooth compatibility, so I figured that I should be able to upload any mp3 sound clip from my computer to my phone and be able to use it as a ringtone. Well, I was wrong. The option to set uploaded mp3 files as ringtones is disabled, ie, "grayed out."
I know that T-Mobile is really great with customer service, so I gave them a call. They didn't know anything about it. To make a long story short, they got me in contact with Samsuch tech support and I was told that "level 2," whoever they may be, could tell me how to enable this feater. When I was transferred to them, they told me no; that it was "impossible."
Well, first of all, I don't believe them, and I'm guessing that by "imposible" they mean "unwilling." It seems there's always a backdoor for providers to do whatever they wanted with the phones. Basically what they told me was that T-Mobile wants its customers to pay for ringtones from T-Zones, which I often happily do. I just want to be able to use my own music clips. And I'd have understood if I'd have bought this phone at a subsidized price, but I paid the full price for this, and I feel that I'm entitled to using my phone's features.
So my question is:
Is there a way for me to enable this feature myself? If not by codes, then by modifying the phone's software? Is it even possible? Should I take this up with T-Mobile/Samsung again?
Thanks for you suggestions....I'm all ears.

well youre not alone, i share the same frustration with this phone, it requires a DRM(digital rights management) license, which i guess is available with t mobile ring tones. i would love to figure out a way around this. if you want sub-par ring tone quality, u could use the software to code it into AMR format but that is horrible quality if you ask me

I have the T809 too I also talked to samsung and they werent very helpfull. I was so pissed I almost returned the phone! You can have mp3 ringtones though I have them working on my phone now, there are a couple of different ways of doing it.
Suposedly you can change the file ext on your pc to .3gp then upload it to the phones MEMORY CARD and it should work but the file size has to be around 60kb I believe. personally I went through a website that reformated everything for me , and they are having a deal if you refer someone they will give you and me a free ringtone so if your interested in going that route email or call me at 602 770 4890 and we will trade info.

I would like to confirm that this method works just fine for me. Just rename the file from song.mp3 to song.3gp and you are good to go.
Just bought my t809 today and am extremely happy I can use my tones on it.

1) when you are in the folder with the mp3 in it, go to Tools >> Folder Options >> click the View tab >> UNCLICK "Hide Extentions for known File Types".
2) Click Apply >> Ok (the mp3 file should know have a .mp3 after it for example" song.mp3")
3) Right click the mp3 files >> Rename>> it will know let you chnage the name. change the last three lettes, the mp3, to "3gp" and click off the song. itll confirm it. then you are done converting.

I have a T809 and have gotten ringers to work on there with no problem, although it was a struggle. I used the software package that came with the phone to cut the mp3 size down. You don't have to cut it down but you can fit more on. Once you are done cutting them down, I could not get just renaming the file to work. run it through windows media player, then go to save as, then save the sile as whatever.3gp. It will convert it into a .3gp file. Now use the software that came with the phone again to send it to your memory card, put them in the sounds folder. Then go to menu, then fun and apps, then file manager, then your memory card, then your sounds folder. Once you open your folder you should see all your files. click options, then do set as ringtone. It will copy the file to your phones memory and there you have it, the sound files are now in your ringers folder. For a recap....
1. Cut your music down, if wanted with software that comes with phone.
2. Open file in Windows Media Player, click file, rename as, the type filename whatever.3gp. It will then save the file as a .3gp.
3. Use phone software to transfer to memory card, put clips into your sounds folder. ( you may have to switch your phone between modem and a mass storage device. You can do this by going to menu, settings, phone settings, then usb settings if your phone is not recognized in windows.
4. After, go to menu, fun and apps, then file manager, then memory card, then your sounds folder. You will see all the clips in here.
5. Highlight a clip, then go to options, then set as ringtone. It will then copy over to your phone as a ringer file.
