I don't know alot about cell phones, but my son is on his way to Vancouver, Canada for a year for school (we are in Ohio) and I was wondering if a cell phone would be good and if so what kind would be best.
Thanks

I thought T-Mobile doesn't have any roaming charges. From what I've heard during my 3 year service, T-Mobile has Free Roaming. If my presumption is wrong, then what IS the definition for Free Roaming with T-Mobile?

Would it be cheaper maybe to go with a land phone? I have also heard about internet phones. Any ideas? Are there contracts or a pay per use with T Mobile? Thanks

If we get the phone in Ohio and he has an Ohio area code, then when he calls here from Vancouver to our area code, would that be considered a local call? Would roaming charges still be involved?

for that purpose...vonage would be better... unlimited LD to canada and the USA...otherwise its LD charges and or fees...vonage requires a dsl or cable connection tho

don't go with an american carrier if he's in vancouver because his number will have to be based from ohio, and everyone who calls him from vancouver, will have to call long distance to ohio to reach him.
he'll still be charged roaming even if he has a ohio number because canada is not included in you "local calling area" i.e. the USA
go with a canadian carrier. the big one's in vancouver are
www.rogers.com
www.bellmobility.com
www.telusmobility.com
you can check the rates and long distance packages to the US for each carrier.
for a land line, he can go through shaw or rogers and have no contract, and they have packages for long distance also.

Hi: I live in vancouver, canada. Theres no cheap way. my service provider is rogers AT&T. and they charge roaming charges. My brother lives in Los Angeles and I call him every week. what I do is i buy a calling card (its called Mango). It gives me over 1000 minutes for only $10.00 cdn.
and i use the calling card for about 5-6 months. with the land line. you cannot use the card with the calling card. roaming charges were added, but when i used the land line, no charges at all.
