It is based on txt messages on most phones. 4.99 for 400 messages, 9.99 for 1000 messages. 14.99 for unlimited messages. On a sidekick, aim is included in the sidekick unlimited plan for 20.00

I believe that I've read that, if you get the $5.99 T-Zones plan and access AIM through that, you don't get charged extra. This sounds reasonable but I can't confirm it.

You'll still get charged regardless. Each IM counts as one message sent to your phone, and those things can really add up. Go with unlimited messages if you're an AIM junky.

I'm not so sure. Once you are in the WAP browswer, you are not sending SMS messages which incur the charges.

Well, if I log off from the web and still let AIM run on my phone. And someone IMs me, then my phone let's me know through SMS. I used to have the 300 messages plan until they ditched that promotional. Well, I went over my limit and I had over 13 dollars of fees. I was asking customer care how I got those charges and they said that I was using AIM which builds-up my messaging count.

For 20.00 a month you get unlimited txt, web, email, instant messages. Everything except phone minutes and downloads from the catalog is included in that monthly fee. If you do not select a tmobile voice plan, the sidekick plan is 30.00. It is only 20.00 as an addon to a voice plan.
