My girlfriend has a Samsung E700, and as part of her Christmas presant I got her a data cable so she can put the pictures from her phone onto her computer. Unfortunately, the driver supplied doesn't work. I've read about on these forums a lot and it seems other people are having the same problem.
Is their a place I can get the driver from that DEFINATELY works? She already has PIMS and the image editor; it's just the usb to serial driver that doesn't work. Is this driver unique to the phone, or will any usb to serial driver work?
Thanks.

The usb driver is unique to the cable and not the phone. It depends on what usb-to-serial device is used in the cable. Hence, the best approach is contacting the cable supplier and request for the correct driver. As far as I know, there are devices like Prolific, OTI, TI and may be more.
If driver is provided with the cable and it doesn't work, there is possibility that the cable is not compatible to E700. Unlike Sony Ericsson or Nokia, Samsung use many different cables for their models and they are not compatible with each other. Make sure the cable you got is compatible to E700. Is there any label on the cable?
To check if the usb driver is installed properly, check Device Manager and under Ports (COM & LPT), see if there is a line like ... usb-to-serial ... (COMx). If instead, you see lines with "!" or "?", it means the driver hasn't been installed. You also has to setup PIMS to use the correct port as assigned to the cable as given in Device Manager.

There's a label on the cable that says E700. Unfortunately, I don't know the manufacturer of the cable - I looked on the box (which is orange, if it helps) but I couldn't see a manufacturer anywhere.
I checked under Device Manager and there was a line saying "usb-to serial...(COM5)" (then later when I tried a different driver it changed to COM4); however there was also a yellow ! displayed, so I don't think the driver was installed properly. When I looked at the properties there was a value along the lines of "serial speed" at about 96000...do I need to select this number in the PIMS settings (as well as the COMx value)?

If it has a label marked E700 on the cable, we can assume that it is the right cable. Let's also assume that the driver that came with the cable is correct. With the cable and phone connected to the PC, uninstall the driver with a yellow "!" by right click and select uninstall. Reboot the computer and see if the previous installed driver is still there by checking Device manager again. If it is, remember what COM port is assigned and setup PIMS accordingly. In PIMS setup check the speed and set it to 115200. If the usb driver is no longer there and your PC detects new device, install the driver that came with the cable.
Hope it helps!

Did you plug the cable to various USB ports?Whenever you change USB port, it will create a new COM port for the driver. If the driver is not shown in Device Manager, try re-intall it again. If it doesn't work, try another computer. If nothing works, it could be the cable is demaged.

Ok, so I've got the cable and software off her to try on my machine. Unfortunately, I don't have the phone, so I can't test that. But what I can confirm is that the driver doesn't install correctly. I installed it using the 'add new hardware' wizard on Windows XP. This is what my device manager looks like - this isn't right, right?
Is there anything I can do, or shall I give up and take the cable back? Where can I buy a replacement (online or offline (in the UK)) that will definately work?

Did you use automatic in add new hardware wizard? You have to use manual and browse to the driver folder in the cd. Some drivers have a setup file which you can run to install the driver. Check the driver cd. By the way, did the PC show any error during device installation?
From the device manager information, it shows the device is UIR1100B which I have not come across before. I tried searching the internet but couldn't find any information on such device.

Wait.. shouldn't the driver be under modem or something? My driver for the phone is under Modems.
But then again, I have a different phone. But hey, same concept! I use a USB cable. :]
Also, I have a samsung e730 which I got up and running fine. I'm guessing the model is somewhat similar, since it's a samsung E series.

E730 is a newer model that may use direct usb interface instead of RS-232 for the older ones. For those models that Samsung specify serial as the original data cable, you need a usb-to-serial driver if you use the 3rd party usb data cable.
